Parenting Perspective
When your daughter begins to approach puberty, curiosity about her changing body is perfectly natural. You are not giving a rigorous biology lesson; you are giving her a sense of comfort, normalcy, and divine wisdom. The key is to explain with simplicity, warmth, and a clear sense of purpose, ensuring you avoid words that sound frightening.
Begin With Calm, Honest Curiosity
When she asks why menstruation happens, start by affirming her curiosity and validating her inner thought process:
- Affirmation: ‘That is a really good question. It shows you are growing up and starting to notice how wonderfully Allah Almighty designed your body.’
This immediately removes any sense of embarrassment and sets a calm tone. It reassures her that she can always come to you safely for answers.
Use Gentle, Age-Appropriate Language
Avoid complicated medical terms or excessive, unnecessary graphic detail. Focus primarily on the purpose rather than the complex process.
- Simple Purpose: ‘Every month, your body gently gets ready to care for a tiny baby one day in the future. When no baby is there, your body simply releases the lining that it prepared, and that is what we call a period.’
This gives her the essential truth without unnecessary complexity. It helps her understand that menstruation is about readiness and balance, not pain or shame. You can also connect it directly to spiritual growth and responsibility:
- ‘It is one of the important signs that your body is becoming more mature, exactly the way Allah Almighty planned for every woman.’
Reassure Her About the Experience
Children sometimes imagine menstruation as something scary or dangerous. Explain calmly that it is a normal and safe process:
- ‘It is not something to worry about at all. It just means your body is healthy and doing exactly what it is supposed to do. Sometimes you might feel tired or get minor cramps, and that is okay; your body is just actively working a little harder that day.’
Pair reassurance with practicality: talk about how to rest, use hygiene products, and maintain spiritual cleanliness (ghusl).
Introduce It as a Sign of Womanly Strength
Shift her internal perspective from discomfort to empowerment. Let her know that her body’s incredible ability to renew itself is a direct reflection of inherent strength and beauty.
- ‘Allah Almighty gave women a special, unique ability to carry life and nurture it, and this cycle is part of that vast wisdom. It shows how perfectly He created us.’
This helps her see menstruation as something sacred and meaningful rather than awkward or secretive.
Avoid Overloading With Information
Give her only what she can emotionally handle now. The goal is not to answer every single question in one sitting, but to ensure you have opened a safe door for ongoing discussion.
- If she asks something deeper or highly detailed, it is perfectly fine to say: ‘That is a really good, deep question. We can talk about that specific part more when you are a little older and ready, insha’Allah.’
This keeps her comfortable and ensures she stays open to future guidance without feeling anxious.
Keep the Spiritual Connection Alive
After explaining the biological basics, gently link it to faith. Emphasise that Allah Almighty designed the body with perfect wisdom, and every stage has a purpose.
- ‘This is one of the beautiful ways Allah Almighty shows His care for us. Our bodies are always working with His perfect command, even when we do not notice it.’
This reflection transforms biology into gratitude and helps her view her body through the lens of faith, not embarrassment.
Spiritual Insight
Beyond the physical explanation lies the deeper truth: menstruation is part of Allah Almighty’s flawless system a reminder of renewal, mercy, and balance in creation. Teaching your daughter this spiritual connection will provide her with emotional security and genuine pride in her womanhood.
The Wisdom in Allah Almighty’s Design
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Mulk (67), Verses 23:
‘Say, “It is He who produced you and made for you hearing, vision, and hearts; little are you grateful.”…’
This verse reminds us that every function of the human body is a sign of divine perfection. When you explain menstruation as part of that wisdom, you are directly teaching your daughter gratitude instead of fear. Her focus shifts from what is happening to why Allah Almighty made it happen. Encourage her to thank Allah Almighty for how He designed the body to care for itself and renew in harmony.
The Prophet’s ﷺ Emphasis on Clear and Respectful Teaching
It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 332, that Asma bint Shakal (may Allah be pleased with her) asked the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ about how to perform ghusl (full purification) after menstruation. The Prophet ﷺ replied with calm guidance:
‘Take water and purify yourself well.’
This Hadith shows how the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) handled sensitive topics with clarity, compassion, and modesty. When Asma felt shy to ask more details, Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) gently guided her and explained the process further in a way that preserved her dignity.
The first time your daughter asks why something happens will shape how she seeks knowledge in the future. When she sees that her questions are met with calmness, clarity, and compassion, she will feel confident and proud. You will have taught her that knowledge and modesty belong together, and that every function of her body is part of Allah Almighty’s mercy and perfect wisdom.
