Parenting Perspective
The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ lived with remarkable cleanliness, grace, and simplicity; qualities that make his Sunnah timeless, even for children today. His habits were not limited to ritual purity but reflected deep respect for the body, the home, and the environment. Teaching these habits to children in relatable ways helps them see that Islam values care, organisation, and mindfulness in everyday life. Cleanliness then becomes not just a rule to follow but a joyful expression of faith.
You can begin by saying, ‘The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ loved cleanliness so much that every act brushing, washing, or tidying was done with care and intention. When we copy him, we are following the best example Allah Almighty ever sent.’
The Habit of Regular Wudu
The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ performed Wudu several times a day, even when not preparing for prayer. Teach children to refresh themselves with Wudu after play or before sleep. You can say, ‘When you wash for Wudu, you are washing away tiredness and starting again with peace, just like the Prophet ﷺ used to do.’
This habit teaches mindfulness, self-regulation, and respect for purity, while also helping children feel calm and emotionally reset.
Keeping the Mouth and Teeth Clean
The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ loved the miswak (a natural tooth stick) and used it frequently. Tell your child, ‘The Prophet ﷺ kept his mouth clean before Salah, before sleeping, and after waking up, because he wanted to meet Allah Almighty with freshness.’
You can modernise this Sunnah by encouraging brushing after meals or before prayer. The goal is not to replicate the miswak itself, but the spirit of cleanliness and respect for the body.
Grooming and Neat Appearance
The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ maintained neat hair, trimmed nails, and a clean appearance. You can teach your child to keep clothes tidy and nails short, saying, ‘When we look neat, we follow the Sunnah and show gratitude to Allah Almighty for what He has given us.’
Encourage them to take pride in hygiene as self-respect, not vanity. This helps children understand that discipline and faith go hand in hand.
Using the Right and Left Hands Appropriately
The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught that the right hand should be used for eating, greeting, and giving, while the left for cleaning. This small habit teaches respect and mindfulness. You can explain, ‘Using our right hand for good actions reminds us to be thoughtful, even in small things; that is the way of the Prophet ﷺ.’
This builds coordination, order, and awareness of intention in everyday behaviour.
Caring for the Environment
The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ encouraged removing harm from pathways, keeping surroundings clean, and never wasting water, even when performing Wudu near a river. You can say, ‘When we pick up litter or use less water, we are following the Sunnah; the Prophet ﷺ taught us that faith means caring for the world too.’
This expands the meaning of cleanliness from personal hygiene to environmental care, nurturing responsibility and gratitude in children.
Keeping the Home Pleasant and Organised
The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ kept his home tidy, swept his floor, and helped with household chores. Parents can model this by involving children in simple cleaning tasks, such as folding clothes or wiping tables. You can say, ‘The Prophet ﷺ helped at home too; cleaning together is a Sunnah and an act of love.’
This creates family cooperation, teaching that cleanliness builds harmony and humility.
Making Cleanliness a Habit of the Heart
Remind children that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ emphasised inner purity just as much as outer hygiene. Teach them to keep their hearts clean from jealousy, lies, or hurtful words. You can say, ‘Just as we wash our hands, we can also wash our hearts by forgiving and being kind.’
This helps them understand that true cleanliness shines from inside out.
Spiritual Insight
The habits of the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ show that cleanliness is not only about appearance but about living thoughtfully. His life teaches that purity, simplicity, and gratitude are forms of worship. Every clean act is a reminder that the believer’s body, home, and environment are trusts from Allah Almighty.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Ahzab (33), Verses 21:
‘Indeed, in the Messenger of Allah you have an excellent example for whoever hopes in Allah and the Last Day and remembers Allah much…’
This verse confirms that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is the ultimate role model, even in the smallest of daily routines. Parents can explain, ‘When you wash, tidy, or help keep things clean, you are copying the Prophet ﷺ, and that brings you closer to Allah Almighty.’
You can describe that these small habits, when repeated with intention, build discipline, humility, and gratitude. Cleanliness becomes an act of love: love for Allah Almighty, for His Messenger ﷺ, and for the blessings He has provided.
It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 223, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Cleanliness is half of faith.’
By following his daily habits neatness, care for nature, tidiness at home, and personal hygiene children learn that being clean is not just about looking good; it is about living beautifully. Through every thoughtful act, they reflect the prophetic light that turns simple routines into worship, and ordinary life into a path of remembrance of Allah Almighty.
