How can we explain that everyone grows differently, and that’s okay in Allah’s plan?

Parenting Perspective

Every child grows at their own pace: physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Some mature early, while others take time. In today’s world, where children constantly compare themselves to friends or media images, this difference can cause anxiety or self-doubt. Parents can ease these feelings by helping children see that growth is part of Allah Almighty’s unique design for every person. When children realise that their timeline is crafted by divine wisdom, they learn self-acceptance, patience, and trust.

You can begin by saying, ‘Allah Almighty made everyone grow in their own time, just like He makes flowers bloom in different seasons.’ This gentle image helps children see variation as beauty, not a flaw.

Shifting Focus From Comparison to Appreciation

Children naturally compare themselves to peers regarding height, strength, skin colour, or academic milestones. Instead of dismissing these comparisons, acknowledge their feelings and guide them gently. Say, ‘It is normal to notice differences, but remember, Allah Almighty’s plan for you is special. No one else has your journey.’

Encourage them to see their body and character as part of a purposeful creation. You can add, ‘What matters is not how fast you grow, but how you use what Allah Almighty gives you with gratitude.’

Connecting Growth With Gratitude

Teach children to thank Allah Almighty for their current stage, even if it feels slower or different. Gratitude replaces frustration with peace. Parents can help by:

  • Encouraging small practices like saying Alhamdulillah for one thing their body can do daily (e.g., breathing easily, running, smiling).
  • Modelling gratitude aloud: ‘Alhamdulillah for our health and our changes; each one shows that Allah Almighty is helping us grow.’
  • Shifting their focus from what they perceive they lack to what they already possess

This practice teaches that caring for one’s body is a form of worship. Gratitude shifts their focus from perceived deficiencies to existing blessings.

Helping Them Trust Divine Timing

Explain that just as rain, sunlight, and fruit arrive at the perfect moment, so does growth. You might say, ‘Allah Almighty never rushes or delays what is best for you. When the time is right, everything changes exactly as it should.’

Children who internalise this lesson develop patience. They begin to see life as a continuous act of trust, a skill that will help them through every phase of adulthood.

Encouraging Kindness Towards Themselves and Others

When children accept their own pace of growth, they become gentler with others. Remind them, ‘Just as your body and feelings grow in their own way, so do your friends’. Everyone has something beautiful that is still unfolding.’

This lesson builds empathy and humility, making them kinder and less judgmental as they navigate friendships and social comparisons.

Affirming That Growth Is More Than Physical

Teach that spiritual and emotional growth matter just as much as physical change. You can say, ‘You might grow taller later, but you can grow kinder and wiser today.’ This reframing helps children see that progress takes many forms, and that every type of growth counts in Allah Almighty’s eyes.

Turning Comparison Into Reflection

If your child expresses jealousy or frustration, guide them toward reflection rather than guilt. Ask, ‘What do you think Allah Almighty is teaching you through waiting?’ This helps them develop insight and see patience as strength. When parents speak with calm confidence, children sense that Allah Almighty’s plan is reliable, even when it feels slow or different.

Spiritual Insight

Growth is one of the clearest signs of Allah Almighty’s power and wisdom. Every stage of life, from infancy to adulthood, unfolds according to His perfect design. No two paths are identical, because no two hearts are the same.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Ar Rum (30), Verses 22:

‘And among His signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth and the diversity of your languages and your colours. Indeed, in that are signs for those of knowledge…’

This verse teaches that difference is not a flaw but a sign of divine artistry. Parents can explain, ‘Just as Allah Almighty made every language and colour unique, He made each person’s growth unique too. You are exactly where He wants you to be.’

You can describe that accepting this truth brings calmness and gratitude. It teaches that Allah Almighty’s plan never misses its mark; that growth delayed is not growth denied. Every change comes with purpose, timing, and care.

It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2999, that the holy Prophet Muhammad  said:

‘Wondrous is the affair of the believer, for there is good for him in every matter, and this is not the case for anyone except the believer. If he is happy, he thanks Allah and that is good for him; if he is harmed, he shows patience and that is good for him.’

This Hadith beautifully links patience with trust. When children understand that even waiting is part of Allah Almighty’s plan, they stop comparing and start believing. They learn that their journey, whether fast or slow, is written with love. And in that awareness, they find peace, confidence, and gratitude for the unique way Allah Almighty helps them grow
