How Can Families Together Thank Allah for the Blessings of Growth, Maturity, and Change?

Parenting Perspective

Families can transform ordinary transitions into acts of worship by collectively practising gratitude (shukr) for the blessings of growth and maturity. This reinforces that every change physical, emotional, or spiritual is a sign of Allah Almighty’s careful design and mercy unfolding in time, nurturing hearts that recognise His sustenance.

Begin With Awareness of Allah Almighty’s Hand in Every Stage

Invite your family to reflect on how Allah Almighty guided them through life’s different stages. You can say, ‘Remember how small you once were? Look at how Allah Almighty helped you learn, grow, and understand more each year.’ This teaches that progress is gifted, not merely self-made. Parents can model gratitude by verbalising it often. Instead of saying, ‘You have grown so fast,’ try, ‘Alhamdulillah, Allah Almighty has helped you grow into someone wiser and kinder.’

Create Family Rituals of Gratitude

Gratitude becomes powerful when shared. Choose moments each week or month to express collective thanks, perhaps after Jumu‘ah, before iftar in Ramadan, or at bedtime. Each family member can mention one change or blessing they are thankful for, no matter how small.

  • Alhamdulillah, I learned to pray on my own.’
  • Alhamdulillah, I made a new friend who reminds me of good things.’
  • Alhamdulillah, Allah Almighty helped me stay patient in a hard situation.’

Such rituals shape a home culture where growth is celebrated through spiritual reflection, not material rewards.

Turn Growth Into Service

Teach your children that gratitude grows stronger when shared. Encourage acts of service that thank Allah Almighty by helping His creation—donating clothes that no longer fit, helping younger siblings study, or volunteering together. Say, ‘When we grow, we thank Allah Almighty by using our strength to help others.’ This shows that maturity involves responsibility and that blessings multiply when they benefit others.

Reflect on Change Without Fear

Help your child see that change is not loss, but renewal. Say, ‘Allah Almighty allows change so we can keep becoming better. Every stage teaches us something we could not have learned before.’ Encourage journaling or duas that begin with ‘Alhamdulillah for…’ This reflection turns fleeting moments into mindful remembrance, grounding children’s hearts in contentment.

End Each Day With Family Dhikr

A simple nightly routine sitting together and reciting SubhanAllahAlhamdulillahAllahu Akbar can anchor gratitude in the home. Parents can lead gently: ‘Before we sleep, let us thank Allah Almighty for how He helped us grow today.’

Spiritual Insight

Gratitude (shukr) is the language of the believer’s heart; it turns ordinary life into worship and growth into remembrance. When families thank Allah Almighty together, they turn their home into a space of contentment and spiritual light

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Ibrahim (14), Verses 7:

‘And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed: “If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favour]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe…”’

This verse promises that gratitude itself is a cause of increase in blessings, peace, and faith. Parents can explain to their children, ‘When we say Alhamdulillah together, Allah Almighty gives us even more reasons to be thankful.’ Reflective insight: ‘When we thank Allah Almighty for growing older, wiser, and kinder, we are really thanking Him for trusting us with more ways to serve Him.’

It is recorded in Jamiah  Tirmidhi, Hadith 1955, that the holy Prophet Muhammad  said:

‘He who does not thank the people is not thankful to Allah.’

This hadith highlights that gratitude begins with appreciation of Allah Almighty, of people, and of moments that shape us. By thanking each other within the home, families indirectly thank their Creator.

When gratitude becomes the rhythm of family life, growth no longer feels like a race; it becomes a journey of blessings recognised and celebrated together.
