Parenting Perspective
For many children, the onset of puberty can feel confusing or overwhelming. Their bodies begin to change, emotions deepen, and new questions multiply. Without guidance, they may feel that something strange or even wrong is happening to them. Parents can transform this uncertain stage into a moment of spiritual grounding by helping their children see that every change is part of Allah Almighty’s perfect plan for their growth.
When parents explain that growing up is not random but is written by Allah Almighty with purpose and mercy, children begin to feel secure. Puberty becomes less about fear and more about readiness for responsibility, faith, and emotional maturity.
Begin With Gratitude, Not Anxiety
Start by saying something gentle and reassuring, such as, ‘Your body is changing because Allah Almighty is helping you grow into the person you are meant to be’. When children hear this, they begin to view puberty as progress, not a problem. Remind them that every stage of life, from infancy to adulthood, comes with lessons, and this one brings the gift of self-awareness.
You can encourage small moments of reflection, like saying Alhamdulillah after noticing a change. This simple act turns physical growth into an act of worship, expressing gratitude for Allah Almighty’s design.
Link Physical Change to Spiritual Growth
Teach your child that puberty is not only about the body, but also about the maturing of the soul. You can say, ‘As your body grows, your heart and mind grow too. Allah Almighty is preparing you to make choices that please Him’.
When children realise that this growth also involves their thoughts, empathy, and prayer habits, they stop focusing solely on physical appearance. This connection between the body and the soul helps them to remain humble, knowing that growth is not about perfection but about becoming more aware of Allah Almighty.
Encourage Faith-Based Reflection
When your child feels nervous about these changes, invite them to talk about how Allah Almighty always plans with wisdom. You might say, ‘Even if this feels strange, it is a sign that Allah Almighty is guiding you into a new chapter of your life’.
Encourage dua, such as asking for peace of heart and strength. A simple prayer like, ‘O Allah, help me grow in a way that pleases You’, can transform confusion into trust. Faith-based reflection gives children a sense of spiritual companionship, knowing they are never alone through their transitions.
Make Guidance Natural and Private
Conversations about puberty do not need to be formal or tense. Create a calm, private moment, perhaps during a walk or before bedtime, and speak naturally. Children feel safer when the tone is gentle and not filled with embarrassment.
You can add, ‘These changes mean you are entering a stage where you can earn more reward from Allah Almighty. Every prayer and every good action counts even more now’. This frames puberty as a privilege, not a burden.
Model Tranquillity and Trust
Children observe how their parents handle sensitive topics. When you speak confidently about Allah Almighty’s wisdom, they will mirror your calmness. Avoid laughing or showing discomfort. Instead, express awe at the beauty of how Allah Almighty created humans to grow in perfect timing.
You might say, ‘We all went through this. It is part of becoming stronger and closer to Allah Almighty’. This normalises their experience while keeping it rooted in faith.
Spiritual Insight
Puberty marks the transition from childhood innocence to accountability, and Islam beautifully honours this journey. Rather than viewing it as a challenge, faith helps children understand it as a sign of divine design, proof that Allah Almighty is guiding them toward responsibility and reward.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah At Tin (95), Verses 4-5:
‘Indeed, We created man in the best form. Then We return him to the lowest of the low, except for those who believe and do righteous deeds, for they will have a reward uninterrupted…’
This verse reminds children that every stage of human life is purposeful and dignified. Even when they feel uncertain about the changes they are experiencing, their worth remains high in the sight of Allah Almighty when they live with faith and good deeds.
It is recorded in Sahih Musslim, Hadith 1829, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Every one of you is a shepherd, and every one of you will be asked about his flock.’
This hadith teaches accountability, that maturity brings responsibility before Allah Almighty. When parents explain that growing up means being trusted to care for one’s body, salah, and behaviour, children begin to welcome responsibility as something honourable.
When faith guides the conversation, puberty becomes a moment of awakening, not anxiety. Children learn that Allah Almighty designed their bodies and hearts to grow together, with every change, emotion, and challenge woven into His plan for their spiritual rise. Through calm conversations filled with faith, parents help their children walk through this chapter with gratitude, dignity, and hope.
