What Can Parents Do If Their Child Starts Using Social Media Influencers As Body Ideals?

Parenting Perspective

Parents cannot remove every negative image, but they can teach their child to see through the illusion of social media. The goal is not to shame children for admiring others, but to help them think critically and spiritually, anchoring their self-worth in the dignity and purpose that Allah Almighty designed within every human being.

Begin With Curiosity, Not Condemnation

If your child mentions wanting to look like an influencer, avoid reacting with frustration. Instead, explore the feeling behind the statement. Ask gently, “What do you like about them?” or “How does their content make you feel about yourself?” Listening first uncovers whether your child is drawn to confidence, style, or approval. This opens the door to reflection instead of argument.

Expose the Illusion, Not the Person

Explain calmly how most online images are edited or staged. Show examples of “before and after” filters or camera tricks that distort reality. Say, “These pictures are made to sell products or attention; they do not show what real life looks like.” Use this as a teaching moment: “Your worth is not a photo. Allah Almighty made you real, not edited.” The aim is to free your child from false comparison.

Encourage Digital Awareness and Boundaries

Help your child curate what they see. Go through their social media together and discuss which accounts make them feel inspired and which cause pressure. Guide them to follow pages that promote kindness, creativity, or Islamic learning. Say, “If something online makes you feel small, it does not deserve your attention.” Empower them to control their feed rather than be controlled by it.

Reinforce Real-Life Role Models

Highlight people who show strength and character: family members, teachers, scholars, or the holy Prophet Muhammad . Discuss qualities like humility, compassion, and service. Say, “True influence is when someone makes others better, not when they make them envy.” When children admire people for their contribution instead of appearance, they build deeper self-respect.

Replace Comparison With Gratitude

Comparison weakens gratitude. Encourage your child to reflect daily on blessings that have nothing to do with looks: health, intelligence, faith, laughter. Suggest journaling three things they are grateful for each night. You can say, “When you thank Allah Almighty for what He gave you, you stop wishing for what was never yours.” Gratitude restores balance where envy once lived.

Spiritual Insight

Faith offers a powerful shield against the illusion of perfection. Islam teaches that every person is created with purpose and honour, and that external beauty fades while inner beauty endures

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Hashr (59), Verses 19:

‘And do not be like those who forgot Allah, so He made them forget themselves…’

This verse reveals that when people lose connection with Allah Almighty, they lose clarity about their own worth. Parents can explain that remembering Allah helps us remember who we arebhonoured, purposeful, and unique. Reflective insight: Tell your child, “When you remember Allah Almighty, you see yourself clearly againbexactly as He meant you to be.”

It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2564, that the holy Prophet Muhammad  said:

‘Indeed Allah does not look at your appearance or your wealth, but He looks at your hearts and your deeds.’

This hadith offers a timeless counter to social media pressure. It teaches that what truly matters cannot be filtered, edited, or liked; it lives within the heart.

When parents guide through faith, awareness, and love, children learn to see beauty as truth, not trend. They begin to admire sincerity over style, substance over display, and their own reflection not as something to fix, but as something to thank Allah Almighty for: perfectly theirs and perfectly designed.
