How Can Parents Address Exposure to Inappropriate Media Through Friends?

Parenting Perspective

When a child encounters inappropriate media through friends, parents should focus on building discernment and maintaining trust. The primary aim is to help the child process what they have seen without fear, while reinforcing Islamic boundaries with understanding and empathy.

React With Calm, Not Shock

When a child admits that they have seen something inappropriate, your initial reaction is crucial. Take a breath and say, “I am glad you told me. That must have felt confusing.” Avoid immediate anger or threats, because fear can push them toward secrecy next time. Calm reassurance allows them to see that you are a safe space, not a source of shame.

Help Them Understand What Makes It Harmful

Instead of simply saying “That is wrong,” explain the deeper reason. Say, “Some videos or images show people without respect or dignity. Islam teaches us to protect our eyes and our hearts because what we see can affect our thoughts.” This shifts the focus from rule-breaking to spiritual self-care. Emphasise that Allah Almighty’s guidance protects them from emotional and spiritual harm.

Equip Them With Responses for Peer Situations

Help your child practise how to respond if friends show them inappropriate media. Suggest they say, “I do not want to see that,” or simply walk away. They can also use you as an excuse: “My parents do not allow this.” This provides a way to save face while standing by their values. Role-playing these moments helps them prepare emotionally.

Discuss the Importance of Digital Boundaries

Guide your child to use devices wisely. Keep screens in shared spaces and encourage openness about what they watch. Instead of strict surveillance, build mutual trust. Say, “I trust you to make good choices, but if something feels uncomfortable, come to me; we will handle it together.” Explain that choosing wisely is an act of strength and faith

Focus on Forgiveness and Growth

If your child has already seen something, remind them that repentance is always open in Islam. Teach them to make dua for forgiveness and protection. You might say, “When we ask Allah Almighty to purify our hearts, He replaces our guilt with peace.” This teaches them to respond with responsibility, not despair.

Spiritual Insight

Islam acknowledges human curiosity while teaching believers to guard their senses. The strength of faith lies not in never being tempted, but in recognising temptation and turning away. Parents can use these moments to show that Allah Almighty’s guidance is protective, not restrictive.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah An Nur (24), Verses 30:

‘Tell the believing men to lower their gaze and guard their private parts; that is purer for them. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what they do…’

This verse reminds both parents and children that purity of the eyes protects the peace of the heart. It is not about fear, but about honouring one’s inner dignity. Reflective insight: Parents can tell their child, “When you protect your eyes, you are protecting your soul. Allah Almighty knows your effort and rewards every small act of restraint.”

It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 36, that the holy Prophet Muhammad  said:

‘Modesty is part of faith.’

This hadith shows that modesty is not silence or shame; it is strength guided by awareness

When parents speak about these matters with wisdom and compassion, they turn uncomfortable experiences into spiritual growth. The child learns that mistakes are moments to return to Allah Almighty, not reasons to hide.
