What can I say when my child asks why Allah created such a challenging stage?

Parenting Perspective

When your child asks why Allah Almighty created a stage as difficult as puberty, they are expressing a deep and sincere thought. This question often comes from genuine confusion and fatigue a longing to understand the wisdom behind the struggle. Their body, emotions, and responsibilities are changing faster than they can manage, and they urgently want to know that it all means something. Your role is to help them see that difficulty is not a punishment but divine preparation. Allah Almighty uses every stage of growth to nurture inner strength, empathy, and deep faith within us.

Beginning with Compassion and Understanding

You must start by validating their feelings. Say, ‘I know this stage feels confusing, and sometimes it seems like too much pressure. Everyone who truly grows up feels this way at some point.’ By sincerely acknowledging their discomfort, you immediately build safety and openness for accepting faith-based guidance.

Explaining Struggle as Part of Divine Design

Tell your child a powerful truth. Say, ‘Allah Almighty made life in meaningful stages. He allows some struggle in each stage so that we learn to be patient, thankful, and mature. If life were always easy and effortless, we would never grow stronger inside.’ This perspective helps them see difficulty as necessary training for spiritual resilience

Connecting Physical Change with Spiritual Growth

Say, ‘Just like your body needs exercise to get stronger, your heart and your faith also need challenges to grow. Every new emotion or responsibility you gain is Allah Almighty wisely teaching you balance and essential self-control.’ When they see growth as purposeful and intentional, it becomes significantly less frightening.

  • Show That Mercy Is Hidden Within Challenge: Remind your child that Allah Almighty’s love continues even when life feels hard. Say, ‘Allah is not testing you to hurt you. He is guiding you to discover hidden strength and patience that you did not know you had.’ This crucial reassurance shifts their mindset from fear to genuine trust in His plan
  • Encourage Du’a as a Path to Peace: Teach your child that when they feel truly overwhelmed, they can simply say, ‘O Allah, help me understand this challenging stage and guide me through it with patience.’ Tell them that turning to Allah Almighty during hardship instantly transforms struggle into connection
  • Be an Example of Calm Faith: Children mirror their parents’ attitudes toward hardship. Share stories of your own challenges and how you found peace through prayer and trust. When children see you handling your own tests with firm trust in Allah Almighty, they learn to do the same.

Spiritual Insight

Islam teaches that every hardship holds profound wisdom and every test carries divine mercy. Puberty is one of those sacred transitions a time when Allah Almighty prepares a young believer to become fully responsible, thoughtful, and spiritually aware. Growth is never intended to break the heart but to polish it, so that it can eventually reflect His light more clearly.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verse 286:

Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear. It will have the consequence of what good it has gained, and it will bear the consequence of what evil it has earned…’

You can explain it to your child by saying, ‘Allah Almighty knows exactly what you can truly handle. If He allows you to face a challenge, it means He already knows you are strong enough to get through it. Every change you face is precisely measured with His mercy.’ This helps them feel capable and divinely protected, not overwhelmed.

It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 5641, that the holy Prophet Muhammad  said:

‘No fatigue, nor disease, nor sorrow, nor sadness, nor hurt, nor distress befalls a Muslim, even if it were the prick he receives from a thorn, but that Allah expiates some of his sins for that.’

You can tell your child, ‘This means every hard feeling, even a small one, washes away sins and brings you closer to Allah Almighty. The more you endure with patience, the more He purifies and strengthens your heart.’

When children learn that difficulty is fundamentally part of Allah Almighty’s love, their fear turns into lasting faith. Through your calm reassurance, gentle tone, and consistent reminders of divine mercy, they will see that this challenging stage is not a curse but a sacred classroom—one where Allah Almighty Himself is the teacher, guiding them toward strength, wisdom, and closeness to Him with every passing day.
