How can I guide my child to see Allah’s mercy in every stage of growth?

Parenting Perspective

As children transition through puberty, they often perceive rapid change as something profoundly uncomfortable their bodies, moods, and thoughts all shifting in unfamiliar ways. These changes can make them question why life feels so uncertain. Your essential role as a parent is to help them see that every stage of growth, no matter how awkward or confusing, is entirely surrounded by Allah Almighty’s mercy. Growth is not just physical; it is a sacred journey of faith, maturity, and becoming closer to the Creator who designed each stage with both wisdom and love

Begin with Wonder, Not Worry

You should encourage your child to see their changing body and fluctuating emotions as clear signs of Allah Almighty’s power rather than problems they must hide. Say, ‘Every time you grow taller, learn something new, or handle an emotion better than before, it is Allah Almighty shaping you carefully into who you are meant to be.’ This perspective helps them view change with gratitude instead of fear.

Linking Everyday Experiences to Divine Care

When your child discusses a new feeling or current struggle, gently connect it to Allah Almighty’s constant mercy. For example, say, ‘You are learning patience now because Allah Almighty is wisely preparing you for bigger responsibilities later in life.’ Showing them the profound meaning behind their change builds trust that everything has a loving purpose.

Teaching Reflection Through Du’a

Encourage your child to pause and sincerely thank Allah Almighty at different, specific moments after successfully learning something difficult, calming down after anger, or recovering from disappointment. You can say, ‘Every time you successfully grow through a struggle, whisper Alhamdulillah it means you recognise His mercy in motion.’ Du’a instantly transforms their passive awareness of growth into active gratitude.

Using Your Own Journey as an Example

Share how your own understanding of Allah Almighty deepened as you matured. Tell your child, ‘When I was your age, I did not understand why certain things happened, but later I clearly saw how Allah’s plan was helping me become stronger.’ This makes faith feel real, lived, and deeply personal, not distant or abstract.

Celebrating Progress, Not Perfection

Remind your child that Allah Almighty loves steady effort far more than flawless outcomes. Say, ‘Even when you stumble or feel weak, He counts your sincere attempt. Growth itself is an act of mercy because it means He is still guiding you.’ This insight builds hope and crucial resilience during difficult stages.

Spiritual Insight

Islam teaches that mercy is intentionally woven into every part of creation in childhood innocence, youthful strength, and adult wisdom. Every season of life carries essential lessons that nurture the soul, reminding us that Allah Almighty’s compassion never pauses, even as we rapidly change.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah An Nahl (16), Verse 78:

‘And Allah brought you out of the wombs of your mothers while you knew nothing, and He gave you hearing, sight, and hearts that you might give thanks…’

You can explain it to your child by saying, ‘From the very moment you were born, Allah Almighty was actively guiding your senses, thoughts, and heart to grow. Every new ability you gain understanding, strength, patience is a clear sign of His constant mercy.’ This helps them see growth as divine care, not random change.

It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 4297, that the holy Prophet Muhammad  said:

‘Allah is more merciful to His servants than a mother is to her child.’

You can tell your child, ‘Just as a mother loves her child through every stage from crying to walking to learning Allah Almighty loves you even more through all your stages of growth. His mercy does not depend on how perfect you are, only on your willingness to keep trying.’

When children begin to see growth as guided by mercy, not hardship, their entire view of life changes. Through your calm words, consistent gratitude, and loving reminders, they will learn that Allah Almighty’s compassion surrounds them at every age—in strength, in weakness, in joy, and in confusion. Every new stage then becomes not something to fear, but a beautiful sign that He is still nurturing their soul toward profound wisdom and faith.
