Parenting Perspective
Height is one of the most noticeable physical traits, and during puberty, children frequently compare their height with friends or siblings. Some may feel embarrassed for being shorter than their peers, while others feel awkward for growing taller quickly. These feelings are perfectly normal but can easily turn into self-doubt if not addressed with wisdom and warmth. Your role as a parent is to help your child see height as one of the many unique gifts Allah Almighty gives each person, not as a measure of their worth or beauty.
Begin with Empathy and Normalisation
Start by sincerely acknowledging their feelings. Say, ‘I know it can feel strange or uncomfortable when you look different from others, but height is just something that naturally changes with time and belongs completely to Allah Almighty’s plan.’ This simple validation helps them feel understood instead of feeling immediately corrected or judged.
Explain that Growth Follows Its Own Timing
Tell your child clearly, ‘Everyone’s body grows at a different pace. Some grow early, some later, and that is completely normal.’ Share relevant examples from your own life or family where people developed at varying times. When they see that growth patterns vary naturally, they stop viewing difference as a defect or a problem.
Reframe Comparison into Gratitude
Guide their focus away from comparison. Say, ‘Instead of wishing for someone else’s height, you should thank Allah Almighty for the strength, energy, and abilities He has given you.’ Help them focus on what their body allows them to do rather than solely on how it looks. Gratitude softens comparison and replaces temporary envy with inner peace.
- Highlight Inner Qualities: Remind your child constantly that the qualities that make a person truly respected are not physical.
- Say, ‘People remember your manners, your honesty, and your warm smile, not your height.’ Encourage your child to intentionally develop qualities like kindness and intelligence that earn long-term respect.
Share Stories of Admirable People
Talk about respected figures in Islamic history or your community who were deeply loved and admired for their character, not their physical size. Say, ‘What truly made them special was how they served others and their dedication to their faith, not how tall or short they were.’ This helps your child understand that greatness has absolutely nothing to do with physical size.
Model Calm Acceptance
Be very mindful of your own comments about appearance. Never joke about height, even playfully. Instead, consistently show contentment in your own features and say, ‘Allah Almighty made each of us different so that we would learn gratitude, not comparison.’
Spiritual Insight
Islam teaches that all human differences whether height, skin tone, or physical form are signs of Allah Almighty’s wisdom and creativity. Accepting these differences calmly is considered an act of faith and genuine gratitude.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran in Surah Al Infitar (82), Verse 7:
‘Who created you, proportioned you, and balanced you…’
You can explain this to your child by saying, ‘Allah Almighty shaped you exactly as He wished. Your height, your voice, and every part of you is made in perfect balance according to His design. Nothing about you is by mistake or accident.’ This profound truth brings peace by connecting physical difference to divine wisdom.
It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2564, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Allah does not look at your appearance or your wealth but looks at your hearts and your deeds.’
You can tell your child, ‘This means that Allah Almighty truly does not care whether you are tall or short. What He values above all is your heart, your kindness, and your effort in this world.’
When children learn that height is simply a detail in the unique masterpiece of creation, they stop seeing it as something they need to change or worry about. With your patient reassurance and faith-centred guidance, they will begin to carry themselves with calm confidence knowing that their ultimate worth is measured not in inches, but in gratitude, goodness, and profound trust in Allah Almighty’s perfect design.
