How do I explain to my child why I walk away from sales when not needed?

Parenting Perspective

In a world where sales and discounts often entice us to buy things we may not truly need, teaching children the wisdom of resisting these offers helps them cultivate a sensible approach to consumerism and money management. Explaining your decision to forgo a sale, especially when the item is unnecessary, helps your child understand that money is a resource requiring thoughtful stewardship, not merely a tool for purchasing.

Focus on Needs Versus Wants

Distinguishing between needs and wants is a clear way to explain your choice. You could say, ‘I am walking away from the sale because we do not really need this item right now. Just because something is discounted does not mean we should buy it if it is not essential.’ Help your child grasp that while sales offer potential savings, not every discount warrants a purchase. The emphasis should remain on acquiring items that are necessary or genuinely valuable, rather than simply being cheaper.

Teach the Value of Financial Goals

Connecting your spending choices to broader financial goals provides context for your actions. Explain that by resisting an unnecessary purchase, you are prioritising saving for something more significant. You might say, ‘I am saving our money for something important, like our family holiday or replacing the washing machine. If I spend on things we do not need, we will not have enough for what matters more.’ This teaches your child about budgeting and the importance of planning and foresight.

Model Mindful Spending

Frame your decision to walk away from a sale as an act of mindful spending. Let your child know you are being thoughtful about your purchases. For instance, you could say, ‘I am managing our money carefully to ensure we have enough for what is truly important to our family. Avoiding unnecessary sales helps us stay focused on our priorities.’ This illustrates that responsible spending involves making choices aligned with your values, not just declining a bargain.

Spiritual Insight

Islam consistently emphasises the importance of managing finances wisely. Every decision regarding wealth reflects our values, and our spending habits should demonstrate a profound sense of responsibility and gratitude for Allah Almighty’s provisions.

The Virtue of Moderation in Spending

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Furqan (25), Verse 67:

‘And those who, when they spend, are neither extravagant nor stingy but hold a just balance between the two.’

This verse teaches us the significance of moderation in all affairs, including expenditure. By walking away from sales for unneeded items, we practise moderation, avoiding both excess and miserliness. We adopt a balanced approach consistent with Islamic principles of living wisely and responsibly with the resources Allah Almighty has entrusted to us.

True Wealth in Contentment

It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 1051, that the holy Prophet Muhammad  said:

‘Richness does not lie in the abundance of worldly goods but richness is the richness of the soul.’

This Hadith teaches that genuine wealth resides not in material possessions, but in inner peace and contentment. By resisting tempting sales offers, we demonstrate to our child that true richness stems from self control and contentment. This reinforces the understanding that wealth is not about accumulation, but about finding peace with what we possess and satisfaction with Allah Almighty’s provisions.

Explaining to your child why you walk away from unnecessary sales teaches them not only the importance of wise financial choices but also instils the virtues of patience, moderation, and contentment. These values will serve as a guide not only in their financial dealings but throughout their lives.
