How can I support my child if schoolmates mock them for not owning trendy brands?

Parenting Perspective

Few things affect a child more deeply than being mocked for circumstances beyond their control. When classmates tease them for not having branded items or trendy clothes, the issue extends far beyond mere fashion; it fundamentally concerns their dignity and sense of belonging. The correct response is one of empathy, focused emotional coaching, and quiet empowerment. Your primary goal is to significantly strengthen your child’s intrinsic confidence while teaching them how to respond to unkindness with grace, rather than shame or retaliation.

Acknowledge the Pain, Not Just the Lesson

Always begin by showing sincere warmth and understanding

  • You could say, ‘That must have really hurt when they said that. I am truly sorry you had to hear unkind words.’ Avoid the common mistake of rushing immediately to moral lessons or solutions.
  • First, allow your child a safe space to process and release their emotion. When you gently name and acknowledge their hurt, you validate their feelings, which is the crucial first step toward confidence and healing.

Teaching Emotional Response, Not Retaliation

Explain to your child that mockery is often a symptom of insecurity or imitation, rather than genuine superiority.

  • You might say, ‘Sometimes people tease others only to try and feel bigger themselves. That unkindness says far more about them than it does about you.’
  • Practise calm responses your child can use in the moment, such as:
  • ‘I like what I have, thank you.’
  • ‘You might care about brands, but I care about comfort and usefulness.’
  • Crucially, practice simply smiling and walking away — silence and disinterest can be significantly more powerful than any argument. Role play these scenarios together so your child feels prepared, not powerless

Building Confidence Through Strength of Identity

Consistently remind your child of their unique qualities and genuine achievements that exist far beyond material things.

  • Praise their effort, kindness, or specific skills: ‘I am incredibly proud of how thoughtful and helpful you are — that makes you special in ways no brand could ever match.’
  • Help them to consciously connect with friends who genuinely share values of respect and kindness. Real belonging stems from being accepted for who you are, not merely for what you wear or own.

Creating a Supportive Environment at Home

At home, actively model dignity in simplicity. Show that gratitude brings peace and avoid discussing others’ material success with envy.

  • Avoid mocking anyone’s lifestyle — children mirror tone more effectively than they adhere to rules. You can also share appropriate stories from your own school days when an act of kindness significantly outlasted a fleeting trend.
  • When a child feels completely secure in your unwavering admiration, external criticism loses almost all of its power.

Through steady reminders and patient empathy, your child will learn that what others say does not define their intrinsic worth. They will discover that true strength lies not in conforming, but in standing tall with unwavering self respect

Spiritual Insight

Islam teaches us that honour and humiliation are ultimately determined by Allah Almighty alone. What other people say cannot diminish the inherent dignity of a believer who carries genuine humility and deep gratitude in their heart. The mockery your child may face is therefore an often overlooked chance to plant profound seeds of faith and resilience

When True Honour Comes from Allah Almighty

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Fatir (35), Verse 10:

‘Whoever desires honour – then to Allah belongs all honour. To Him ascends good speech, and righteous work raises it…’

This verse beautifully shifts their entire perspective from chasing fleeting worldly validation to seeking lasting Divine worth. When you share this with your child, you can tell them, ‘People can make small jokes, but they absolutely cannot give or take away your real value — Allah Almighty already honoured you by making you unique and capable.’ Such words firmly anchor their confidence beyond the shallow realm of peer opinion.

When Humility Elevates the Believer

It is recorded in Sunan Abu Dawood, Hadith 4895, that the holy Prophet Muhammad  said:

‘Allah has revealed to me that you should be humble so that no one boasts over another or oppresses another.’

This Hadith teaches the profound truth that humility, not social status or material display, is what genuinely earns Allah’s love. Encourage your child to remain gentle, not defensive, when they are mocked. Explain, ‘Every single time you choose kindness instead of pride, Allah Almighty raises your spiritual rank.’ This perspective transforms their hurt into quiet inner strength — a victory that may be unseen by the world but is truly honoured by Heaven.

By gently guiding your child through mockery with faith, empathy, and perspective, you successfully teach them that their true worth is not measured in expensive fabric or current fashion. They learn that their courage, voice, and kindness matter far more than any brand logo could ever display.

In time, your child will learn to face such uncomfortable moments with calm dignity — no longer attempting to frantically prove their value, but simply carrying it naturally, knowing that the one who walks humbly with Allah Almighty is never truly small in the eyes that matter most.
