How can I help my child see that building a career takes time and effort, not shortcuts?

Parenting Perspective

Children today are constantly exposed to narratives of instant fame and overnight success, which can lead them to believe that achieving a meaningful career is possible through immediate gains or shortcuts. To counter this pervasive culture of instant gratification, parents must consciously root their children in the beauty and dignity of gradual, persistent effort

Normalising the Journey of Gradual Growth

Begin by fostering open and honest conversations about what genuine success entails. Explain that every respected professional, scholar, or community leader once started small, faced setbacks, experienced failure, and diligently improved through continuous effort. Share candid examples from your own life or the lives of trusted friends, detailing the specific mistakes you made and the persistence it took to overcome them. This practice humanises success, revealing it as a journey of incremental learning rather than a single moment of triumph.

Valuing Effort Over Outcome

It is crucial to shift your child’s focus from chasing immediate results to valuing the process of sincere striving. Encourage and establish routines that reward consistency: setting weekly goals for skill practice, research, or study, instead of fixating solely on test scores or final grades. When children see progress unfold slowly through their own diligence, the concept of patience begins to feel rewarding, not frustrating. Always praise the effort and the intentionality behind the work: ‘I am genuinely proud of how you researched that topic thoroughly,’ or ‘You showed great persistence when that task became difficult.’ This reinforces the idea that true worth is found in the striving.

Inspiring Through Authentic Narratives

Broaden their exposure beyond celebrity culture by sharing biographies of individuals who built meaningful lives through sheer perseverance. Introduce them to the stories of dedicated craftsmen, pioneering scholars, humble teachers, and selfless community workers. These narratives demonstrate that a life of dignity and lasting impact is constructed through honest, sustained labour. By continuously reminding your child that Allah Almighty values honest striving (kasb halaal) more than quick outcomes or fleeting fame, you instill a work ethic where effort itself is imbued with spiritual dignity.

Spiritual Insight

The Islamic perspective provides the ultimate reassurance that true achievement is fundamentally tied to the sincerity and consistency of one’s effort, a principle that is eternally valued by the Creator. Success is not a matter of luck but a direct consequence of sustained, conscientious labour.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah An Najm (53), Verse 39:

‘And that there is not for man except that [good] for which he strives…’

This verse establishes a foundational principle of divine justice. It confirms that a person’s success, happiness, and ultimate reward are earned through their own honest striving. There is no entitlement; reward is linked directly to effort. This teaching is a powerful counter-narrative to the culture of shortcuts. It shows children that their energy is best invested in diligence, because every sincere effort is recorded and will be justly accounted for by Allah. It encourages them to seek mastery in their tasks, knowing that their spiritual reward for striving is guaranteed, regardless of the worldly outcome.

It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 3170, that the holy Prophet Muhammad  said:

‘Allah has prescribed Al-Ihsan (proficiency) in all things.’

This Hadith elevates the standard of one’s work to a spiritual imperative. The requirement to perform a job ‘with perfection’ (itqan) is a demand for meticulousness, commitment, and sustained quality. This wisdom teaches children that true achievement is not merely about completing a task, but about doing it to the best of their ability, whether it is a homework assignment, a household chore, or a professional duty. This mindset ensures that their striving is rooted in Sincerity and excellence (Ihsan) for Allah’s pleasure, rather than rushing towards fleeting worldly recognition.
