What is a fair upgrade path when devices age at different times?

Parenting Perspective

As electronic devices, such as mobile phones, tablets, and laptops, inevitably slow down or become less efficient with age, the desire for an upgrade is natural. When siblings are involved, navigating device upgrades fairly can be challenging, particularly if the devices were acquired at different times and thus age inconsistently. The key to fairness in this scenario is to establish clear, consistent criteria for when upgrades are necessary, ensuring the process feels equitable for every child, regardless of the timing of their new device. It is crucial to base the decision on practical needs and functionality, rather than sibling comparison or competition, so that each child feels valued and understood.

Establishing Clear Criteria for Upgrades

To minimise confusion or complaints, you must define explicit criteria that determine the appropriate time for an upgrade.

  • State the standard: “Devices will be upgraded when they are no longer able to perform the essential tasks you need, or when they are no longer receiving necessary security updates. The decision to upgrade will not be based on who has had their device the longest, but purely on whether the device is still serving its intended purpose.”
  • By framing the upgrade path around the functionality and necessity of the technology rather than arbitrary timelines or comparisons, you establish a logical, consistent standard that applies equally to everyone.

Focusing on Device Condition, Not Just the User

When evaluating the need for an upgrade, the central factor must be the age and current condition of the device, not simply the sibling who uses it.

  • Apply the assessment: “If one device is starting to show significant signs of age, such as drastically slower performance or the inability to run essential academic or communication applications, it might be time for an upgrade. We will make this decision based on the device’s practical status and condition, not on emotion or simple timing.”
  • This places the emphasis squarely on practical needs and prevents the situation from revolving around feelings of envy or perceived unfairness.

Considering Shared Responsibility for Upgrades

If one child’s device requires an upgrade significantly before another’s, consider promoting a sense of shared responsibility or collaboration in the process.

  • Suggest teamwork: “Let us discuss how we can work together when upgrading devices. Perhaps the child who has the older device can help by committing to maintaining their current device in excellent condition for a little longer, or we can all save together for a shared upgrade goal that benefits the family overall.”
  • This strategy reduces feelings of resentment and encourages a family approach to resource management and teamwork.

Planning Regular Device Check-ins

Given that devices continually age, it is important to implement a routine for checking their condition and performance.

  • Establish a schedule: “Let us agree to check in every six months to review whether all devices are still working well for your needs, and if any necessary upgrades are approaching. By establishing this routine, we keep the process fair and ensure everyone’s needs are heard and met promptly.”
  • Establishing a routine for device discussions reduces the opportunity for sibling rivalry to develop and ensures the family is proactive about meeting everyone’s needs.

Spiritual Insight

In Islam, fairness (Adl) and equity (Qist) are core principles, and parents are strongly encouraged to ensure all children are treated justly in every aspect of their lives. This extends to decisions regarding material possessions, including electronic devices. Islamic teachings emphasise that fairness is not merely about equal distribution, but about judiciously providing each person with what they need, based on their individual circumstances. By guiding your children through equitable decisions about upgrades, you align your family life with the Islamic values of justice, consideration, and responsibility.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah An Nisa (4), Verse 58:

‘Indeed, Allah commands you to render trusts to whom they are due and when you judge between people to judge with justice. Excellent is that which Allah instructs you. Indeed, Allah is ever Hearing and Seeing.’

This verse underscores that fairness and justice must be at the centre of all our actions, including how we manage the practical needs of our children. By focusing on each device’s functionality and age, rather than merely dwelling on sibling comparisons, you ensure the decision is made with equity and justice, in accordance with the guidance of Islam.

It is recorded in Bulugh Al Maram, Hadith 184, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘Fear Allah and be just with your children.’

This Hadith serves as a powerful reminder that justice in every decision from the smallest matters to larger ones like technology upgrades is essential for maintaining a harmonious and just family environment. By guiding your children through the process of upgrading devices with fairness and empathy, you teach them the importance of justice, responsibility, and gratitude in all aspects of their lives.

Through this balanced and principled approach, your children will learn that fairness is fundamentally about understanding and addressing individual needs and ensuring that everyone is treated with respect and equity.
