Parenting Perspective
Teens are frequently exposed to a barrage of skincare products marketed as absolutely essential for achieving clear, healthy skin. The emotional core driving their interest is a mix of self-consciousness and curiosity, while parents may worry about overspending, maintaining unnecessary routines, and the overwhelming influence of marketing. Guiding teens effectively requires empathy, education on product efficacy, and practical strategies to help them build effective, sustainable routines without falling into indulgence or succumbing to external pressure.
Validate Their Concerns and Intentions
Start the conversation by genuinely acknowledging their underlying feelings and the positive intent behind them. One might say: ‘I completely understand that you want to take good care of your skin – it shows you value your health and care about your appearance.’ This initial validation helps the teen feel heard and opens the conversation without judgement, making them more willing to discuss practical limits.
Prioritise Essentials for an Effective Routine
Help teens clearly distinguish between the truly essential steps in skincare and the marketing-driven extras. Focus the routine firmly on basics that are necessary for skin health: cleansing, moisturising, and daily sun protection. A guiding parent script is: ‘Let us choose a simple, foundational routine that is tailored to your specific skin type and fits comfortably within our budget. Remember, the endless extra products are truly optional, not required for healthy skin.’ This approach reduces confusion and overwhelm, encourages consistency, and promotes the powerful idea that less is often more.
Introduce Financial Awareness and Budgeting
Guide teens in setting a realistic and fixed monthly skincare budget. This practical step turns self-care into a lesson in financial literacy. A helpful parent script is: ‘We can allocate a specific, small amount each month for your skincare – if a new product is genuinely worth the investment, it needs to fit into this pre-agreed plan; if it does not fit, we wait or skip it.’ Teaching them concepts like cost-per-use and the long-term benefit of quality basics over cheap trends fosters invaluable financial awareness and intentional, conscious decision-making.
Encourage Research and Ethical Evaluation
Teach teens how to independently check ingredients, verify the Halal status, and critically evaluate the marketing claims made by brands. A suggested parent script is: ‘Before we buy any new product, let us take the time to look up exactly what the product is meant to do, check its key ingredients, and confirm that it is both safe and Halal – this way, you always make truly informed and responsible choices.’ Researching and evaluating products reinforces independence, critical thinking, and ethical responsibility in consumption. By validating concerns, focusing on essentials, budgeting wisely, and encouraging research, teens gain confidence in their skincare choices. They internalise that consistent, safe routines are more effective than chasing every trend, building discipline, self-respect, and financial literacy simultaneously.
Spiritual Insight
Islam encourages moderation (i’tidal), diligent care for the body as a sacred trust (amanah), and responsibility with all resources. Teaching teens mindful skincare aligns self-care with the spiritual virtues of gratitude, ethics, and responsible stewardship.
The Principle of Moderation in Adornment
The noble Quran provides clear guidance against extravagance and excess in all forms of self-care and adornment. This directly addresses the tendency to over-consume skincare products.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Araf (7), Verse 31:
‘O children of Adam, take your adornment at every masjid and eat and drink, but be not excessive…’
This verse highlights the importance of moderation in all aspects of self-care, reminding teens that appearance and grooming should never become excessive or wasteful. Parents can connect establishing a mindful, simple skincare routine to this principle, emphasising balance and conscious, non-extravagant choices.
The Value of Consistent Self-Respect
The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ consistently stressed the importance of moderation and dignified self-respect in daily life, reinforcing the need for consistent, safe practices.
It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 2142, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Be moderate in seeking worldly things, for everyone will be facilitated for which he was created.’
Parents can directly relate this teaching to their child’s skincare: selecting only the essentials, adhering to a budget, and maintaining safe routines demonstrates responsibility, mindfulness, and deep respect for oneself as a creation of Allah. A powerful parent script is: ‘By caring for your skin thoughtfully and moderately, you honour both your health, which is a gift, and Allah Almighty’s guidance, which encourages care without excess.’ Through empathy, practical advice, and spiritual framing, teens internalise that healthy skincare is about consistency, safety, and sincere intention, not indulgence or chasing trends.
