How can I build a monthly check-in that reduces surprise and jealousy?

Parenting Perspective

Creating a monthly family check-in can be an effective way to reduce surprises and feelings of jealousy, especially when it comes to money or allowances. The key is to create a routine where everyone’s needs are discussed openly. By setting a regular time to review family resources, you can foster a sense of transparency that prevents misunderstandings from taking root.

Establish a Regular Schedule

Set a predictable time each month to discuss finances and family needs. You could say, ‘Let us set a day every month to talk about our savings and allowances. This way, no one is ever surprised by decisions, and we can make sure everything is fair.’ This helps children to see that financial matters are handled with a clear and open system.

Encourage Open Dialogue

Actively encourage your children to share their thoughts and concerns during these check-ins. An invitation like, ‘If there is anything you are worried about, now is the perfect time to talk about it,’ fosters an atmosphere of transparency and trust.

Reassure Them of Your Commitment to Fairness

Reaffirm your commitment to fairness during these discussions. You can promise them, ‘We will always work to make sure everything is balanced. If anyone feels something is unequal, we will listen and adjust it together.’ This reassures them that their needs will be taken seriously.

Set Clear Goals for the Month Ahead

Discuss the family’s financial goals and expectations for the upcoming month, ensuring everyone feels involved. Framing it as, ‘Let us set some goals together and decide how we can all work towards them,’ helps your children to feel engaged and motivated as a family team.

Spiritual Insight

In Islam, the values of transparency, fairness, and cooperation are central to a healthy family life. By holding regular check-ins to discuss shared resources, you are aligning your home with these principles and fostering an environment of open and fair communication.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah At Tawbah (9), Verse 105:

‘And say, “Do [as you will], for Allah will see your deeds, and [so will] His Messenger and the believers…”’

This verse powerfully emphasises the importance of transparency and accountability in all our actions. By creating a regular family check-in, you are encouraging these very values of openness and honesty in your home.

It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 6136, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should speak good or remain silent.’

This hadith teaches us the importance of honest and constructive communication. A monthly check-in is a perfect opportunity to ‘speak good’ by discussing important family matters with fairness, transparency, and mutual respect.
