Parenting Perspective
When siblings are asked to plan for a shared goal, the challenge is to encourage cooperation over conflict. The key to peaceful planning is to foster an environment of clear communication, empathy, and fairness. By teaching siblings to respect each other’s ideas, you can help them to achieve their goals in a way that strengthens their bond.
Establish a Clear, Shared Goal
Start by helping them to set a clear and achievable goal that both siblings are equally invested in. You could say, ‘Let us decide together on one shared goal that you can both work towards, something that will benefit you both.’ This helps to create a sense of ownership and equality from the very beginning.
Create a Collaborative Plan
Encourage your children to discuss and create a plan together. Ask them, ‘How can each of you contribute to this goal? What special skills can each of you bring to make it happen?’ This ensures that both children feel that their contributions are seen and valued.
Foster Respectful Communication
Actively encourage open communication where both siblings have a chance to speak and listen to each other’s ideas. You might remind them, ‘It is important to listen respectfully to each other. You both have unique ideas, and together, you can create the best plan.’ This teaches them how to build a sense of teamwork.
Monitor Their Progress and Offer Guidance
Check in with them regularly to see how their collaboration is progressing, offering support and encouragement where needed. A simple, ‘I am so proud of how you are working together on this,’ can help to keep the process on track and prevent any misunderstandings from growing.
Spiritual Insight
In Islam, teamwork, cooperation, and mutual respect are essential qualities. Encouraging siblings to plan for a shared goal is a practical way to foster these values, helping them to grow closer and learn how to collaborate with kindness and fairness.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Maidah (5), Verse 2:
‘…Help one another in righteousness and piety, but do not help one another in sin and aggression.’
This verse is a direct command to cooperate in all good deeds, fostering a spirit of teamwork and mutual support. By helping your children to plan a shared goal together, you are helping them to live out these beautiful Islamic values of collaboration and unity.
It is recorded in Riyadh Al Saliheen, Hadith 224, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘The believers are like one body: when one part of the body suffers, the whole body suffers.’
This hadith beautifully emphasises the importance of unity and mutual support. By guiding your children to work together towards a shared goal, you are helping them to strengthen their bond and to feel the truth of this prophetic teaching in their own lives.
