Parenting Perspective
When you feel pressured to host lavishly to ‘prove fairness’ to relatives, it can create unnecessary stress, particularly if your financial resources are limited. The key is to calmly set boundaries and manage expectations, focusing on the spirit of hospitality rather than extravagant spending. By creating a plan that aligns with your family’s values and budget, you can prevent feelings of competition or inadequacy.
Set Clear Expectations with Relatives
Start by communicating your priorities openly with relatives. You could say, ‘We love having everyone over, but we prefer to keep our gatherings simple and heartfelt. For us, the time we spend together is what matters the most.’ This sets a clear tone for a relaxed gathering focused on connection, not competition.
Emphasise Hospitality Over Extravagance
Gently explain that the quality of a gathering is about the experience, not the scale of the event. Reinforce the idea that, ‘What matters are the memories we create, not the grandeur of the occasion.’ This helps to remind everyone that true hospitality is measured by love and care, not by wealth.
Reinforce Your Family’s Value of Simplicity
Teach your own family to value simplicity in all aspects of life. You can say, ‘Our family values meaningful gatherings where we can focus on each other’s company, not on extravagant displays.’ This helps to establish a family culture that prioritises people over possessions.
Model Humility and Gratitude
Lead by example by showing genuine contentment with simpler gatherings. A statement like, ‘Let us be thankful for what we have and focus on making this a joyful time for everyone, without needing anything extravagant,’ sets a positive tone. This shows that love and warmth are the most important ingredients for any family event.
Spiritual Insight
In Islam, simplicity, humility, and genuine generosity are core values.1 The social pressure to host lavishly can detract from this beautiful spirit, so it is important to uphold the Islamic principles of moderation and contentment.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Araf (7), Verse 31:
‘O children of Adam, take your adornment at every masjid and eat and drink, but be not excessive. Indeed, He likes not those who commit excess.’
This verse powerfully emphasises the importance of moderation in all areas of life, including hospitality. By choosing to host in a simple yet thoughtful manner, you are aligning your actions with the beautiful Islamic principle of avoiding extravagance.
It is recorded in Riyadh Al Saliheen, Hadith 611, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Allah is beautiful and loves beauty, but He does not like extravagance.’
This teaching encourages us to find beauty in simplicity and heartfelt effort rather than in material excess. By setting gentle boundaries around lavish hosting, you are reflecting the noble Islamic teachings of modesty, contentment, and true generosity.
