What is a respectful way to set gift rules before visits?

Parenting Perspective

Setting clear rules about gift-giving before family visits is a crucial way to prevent misunderstandings or feelings of favouritism. By establishing guidelines ahead of time, you can align everyone’s expectations and avoid any awkwardness. The goal is to foster a sense of unity and fairness, where everyone feels equally appreciated, regardless of the gifts exchanged.

Be Transparent About Your Expectations

Start by openly discussing your hopes for gift-giving with relatives. You could say, ‘To make sure everyone feels comfortable and valued, we would like to suggest a simple approach to gifts this year, focusing on thoughtfulness rather than how much is spent.’ This sets a clear and respectful tone, ensuring everyone understands the reasoning behind your request

Encourage Thoughtful, Not Expensive, Gifts

Encourage the idea of giving meaningful, personalised gifts rather than extravagant ones. You might suggest, ‘Let us focus on gifts that have personal value. It is the thought and care behind the gift that truly matters the most to our family.’ This helps to shift the focus from material value to emotional connection

Set a Gentle Budget Limit

If it feels appropriate for your family, you can suggest a gentle budget limit for gifts to prevent anyone from feeling uncomfortable or pressured to overspend. The goal is to ensure that everyone can enjoy the visit with the focus remaining on family time, not on material possessions

Communicate Your Family’s Values

Reinforce the importance of generosity and kindness over the monetary value of a gift. Explaining, ‘We give gifts to show our love and appreciation, not to compete with one another,’ helps to establish a family culture that values kindness and respect over materialism

Spiritual Insight

Islam teaches the importance of giving gifts with sincerity and love, without any focus on competition or status.1 The beautiful goal of giving gifts in our faith is to strengthen family bonds and to foster a spirit of generosity and gratitude.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Mumtahanah (60), Verse 8:

‘Allah does not forbid you from those who do not fight you because of religion and do not expel you from your homes – from being righteous toward them and acting justly toward them. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.’

This verse reminds us of the profound importance of fairness and kindness in all our dealings. By setting fair rules for gift-giving and encouraging generosity without excess, you are aligning your family’s culture with the beautiful values of justice and kindness that Allah loves.

It is recorded in Al Adab Al Mufrad, Hadith 594, that the holy Prophet Muhammad  said:

‘Give gifts to each other, for gifts increase love among you.’

This beautiful hadith encourages us to give gifts with the sole intention of fostering love and respect, not competition.3 By setting clear and respectful rules for gift-giving, you help to promote this spirit of generosity and family love, in perfect alignment with Islamic teachings.
