Parenting Perspective
Hand-me-downs can sometimes be seen by a child as being ‘second-best,’ but with the right mindset and approach, they can be reframed as a positive and enriching experience. The key is to help your child to appreciate the value in receiving hand-me-downs, whether that is the value of sustainability, the opportunity to wear something unique, or the love that is behind the act of sharing. By focusing on the positive aspects of this practice, you can make hand-me-downs feel like a privilege, rather than a compromise.
Highlight the Value of Sustainability
You can start by explaining how reusing clothes can be an environmentally friendly choice. A simple statement like, ‘Hand-me-downs are a wonderful way for our family to reuse and recycle. You are helping the planet by reducing waste, and you are also receiving something that has been well-loved,’ can help to reframe the concept.
Emphasise the Uniqueness of Each Piece
Help your child to appreciate that hand-me-downs often come with their own special history. You could say, ‘These clothes have already been enjoyed by someone else in our family, and now it is your turn to enjoy them. You are getting something that is a part of our family’s story.’ This can create a beautiful sense of story and connection, rather than a feeling of receiving something that is simply ‘second-hand.’
Introduce New Accessories or Personalisation
To make a hand-me-down feel more exciting, you can consider adding a new accessory or allowing your child to personalise the item in some way. An offer like, ‘How about we add a fun new scarf or a bracelet to this outfit? We can also think of some ways to make it feel unique to you,’ can give your child a sense of ownership over the clothes, transforming them from something ‘old’ into something fresh and new.
Reinforce the Value of Gratitude and Sharing
You can teach your child to feel grateful for what they have, rather than focusing on what they lack. A gentle reminder that, ‘We may not always get everything brand new, but we can always be thankful for what we have, and we can share what we no longer need with others,’ can help to promote a sense of contentment.
Spiritual Insight
In Islam, the values of sharing, gratitude, and contentment are strongly emphasised, especially when it comes to our material possessions. By teaching your children to appreciate hand-me-downs, you are helping them to align with the beautiful Islamic principles of generosity and thankfulness.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verses 267:
‘O you who have believed, spend from the good things which you have earned… And do not aim toward the defective therefrom, spending [from that] while you would not take it [yourself] except with closed eyes…’
This verse reminds us of the importance of using our resources wisely and humbly. It encourages us to give from the good things we possess. The act of passing on good quality clothing to others is a beautiful reflection of this principle.
It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2588, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘…Charity does not decrease wealth…’
This hadith highlights the immense value of benefiting others. By teaching a child to both gratefully receive and generously give hand-me-downs, you are instilling in them the beautiful Islamic principle of benefiting others, which can in turn foster in them a sense of generosity, sustainability, and gratitude.
