How do I reset when allowances have become bribes rather than training?

When an allowance system shifts from a tool for teaching responsibility to a bribe for basic chores, it is important to reset the approach. The purpose of an allowance should be to teach children about money, responsibility, and the connection between effort and reward. If allowances become bribes, it undermines the value of work, and children may start expecting payment for everything. To reset, you must clarify the purpose of an allowance, introduce new guidelines, and reconnect rewards with personal growth rather than simple compliance. 

Acknowledge the Shift 

Start by acknowledging that the system has changed. ‘I see that the way we have been doing allowances is not working as intended. An allowance should be about teaching you to manage money, not about getting paid for basic family duties’. This sets the stage for an open, non-judgmental discussion about resetting the system, allowing your child to understand the shift without feeling blamed. 

Clarify the Purpose of Allowances 

Reframe the role of an allowance. Explain that it is tied to learning how to manage finances, rather than fulfilling basic family duties. ‘From now on, allowances will be about learning to handle money responsibly. You will earn your pocket money by doing extra tasks beyond your regular family duties, like helping with special projects or learning new skills’. This redefines an allowance as a tool for financial education, not a transaction for chores. 

Introduce a New System Tied to Personal Growth 

Reintroduce allowances as a way to encourage personal growth and effort. ‘Your regular chores will no longer be tied to pocket money. Instead, we will look at bigger tasks or goals that help you grow, such as learning to save or helping with a new project’. This makes an allowance about gaining skills and maturity, rather than just getting money for expected household contributions. 

Spiritual Insight 

Islamic teachings emphasise justice, responsibility, and fairness within the family. Allah Almighty encourages parents to teach their children the values of honesty, hard work, and accountability, which should be at the heart of any allowance system. The concept of reward in Islam is about instilling good habits, not bribery. 

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verse 286: 

‘Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear.’ 

This verse reminds us that responsibilities should align with a person’s ability. By resetting the allowance system to focus on personal growth, parents can ensure that children are learning valuable life skills. It also teaches children that responsibility is a natural part of family life, not something done only in exchange for material rewards. 

It is recorded in Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith 3544, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 

‘Act equally between your children; Act equally between your sons.’ 

This hadith serves as a reminder that fairness must guide all our dealings, including how we reward our children. An allowance should not be a bribe, but a teaching tool that encourages financial literacy. Resetting the system to reflect these values aligns with the Islamic principle of justice, ensuring children are taught valuable life lessons.
