How can I teach giving a small share to Sadaqah from allowance?

Parenting Perspective

Teaching children to give a small share of their allowance to Sadaqah (charity) is an important way to instil generosity, empathy, and social responsibility. This practice helps children understand that wealth is a blessing from Allah Almighty that should be shared with those in need. This involves more than simply asking them to part with their allowance. It is about helping them internalise the value of charity and recognise that even small acts of giving can make a big difference, ensuring the process is meaningful and not forced.

Explain the Importance of Giving

Start by explaining why giving Sadaqah is important and how it reflects gratitude for the blessings of Allah. ‘We give a part of what we have to help those in need. This is not just about money; it is about showing kindness and ensuring others can live with dignity’. By framing Sadaqah as an act of gratitude, you help children see it as a form of worship that purifies their wealth.

Introduce the Concept of a Percentage

Rather than making the process feel burdensome, introduce the idea of setting aside a small percentage of their allowance. For example, ‘Let us set aside ten percent of your weekly allowance for Sadaqah. It is a way of helping others and will teach you how to share the blessings Allah Almighty has given us’. By breaking the act down into a specific percentage, it becomes easier for children to grasp and feels less intimidating.

Make It a Routine, Not a One-Time Event

Integrate giving Sadaqah into their regular allowance routine to make it part of their financial education. You could say, ‘Each week, when you receive your allowance, we will first set aside a portion for charity before spending the rest. This is a habit we will build so that giving becomes natural’. Consistency is key to teaching children that Sadaqah is a continuous practice they can carry with them throughout their lives.

Spiritual Insight

In Islam, giving Sadaqah is not just about alleviating material need, but also about purifying one’s wealth and soul. It teaches generosity, empathy, and a strong sense of community, aligning with the Islamic value of caring for others and sharing blessings. Encouraging children to give a portion of their allowance to Sadaqah from a young age helps them internalise these values.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verse 261:

‘The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like that of a seed of grain that grows seven ears, each bearing one hundred grains.’

This verse beautifully illustrates the multiplying effect of charity. When a child gives even a small portion of their allowance, it can have an exponential impact, both in the reward from Allah Almighty and in the positive change it brings. By teaching your child to give, you help them understand that their small act of kindness can grow and have a much bigger effect than they might realise.

It is recorded in Mishkaat Al-Masabeeh, Hadith 1896, that the holy Prophet Muhammad  said:

‘Every bone of men’s fingers and toes must give sadaqa every day the sun rises.’

This hadith reinforces that the true value of our blessings lies in how we use them to benefit others. By teaching your children to give a small share to Sadaqah from their allowance, you are helping them develop the Islamic principle of generosity, while also nurturing gratitude for the blessings of Allah Almighty.

Through this practice, you are not only teaching your children about charity but also helping them develop compassion, responsibility, and spiritual growth, in line with the teachings of Islam.
