Let us agree on clear expectations for your allowance moving forward’. This establishes a fair system where both parent and child understand the link between allowances and responsibilities. 

Spiritual Insight 

In Islam, fairness and responsibility are key principles tied to the concept of earning. Allowances are a teaching opportunity to instil the values of responsibility and gratitude. The concept of earning based on effort, rather than entitlement, aligns with Islamic teachings on accountability. 

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verse 286: 

‘Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear.’ 

This verse is a reminder that each person’s responsibilities should match their ability. An allowance should be based on what a child can reasonably accomplish. This helps children understand that their rewards are linked to their actions, not to what they feel they are owed. 

It is recorded in Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith 3544, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 

‘Act equally between your children; Act equally between your sons.’ 

This hadith teaches the importance of fairness in all dealings, including money. By applying this to allowances, parents can ensure that children learn the values of equity and accountability. Explaining that missed weeks of chores do not result in back pay teaches a child the importance of being consistent and responsible in fulfilling their duties, which are key principles in Islam.
