How do I stop them from feeling fear of “having less” when they give?

Reassurance and Emotional Evidence

The emotional root of hesitating to give is insecurity, the thought that what is gone will not return. Parents must gently replace this fear with faith by showing that giving never leaves a person empty. Begin by offering reassurance every time your child shares. Say, “When you give, Allah Almighty always replaces it with something better.” Explain that sometimes the replacement is not a new toy or gift, but happiness that spreads inside the heart. Give them simple, visible examples. After sharing a snack, point out that eating together feels warmer and more joyful than eating alone. These real moments build emotional evidence that giving brings more, not less.

Building Safety and Rituals of Trust

Children feel safe when they understand and can predict what will happen. Introduce generosity gradually. Start with small things, such as offering part of a treat or choosing an extra fruit to give away. Once they experience joy and gratitude in return, slowly move toward sharing more valued possessions. Each time, pause and reflect together: “What did we gain today?” This helps them connect giving with satisfaction instead of fear. Turn the act of giving into a comforting ritual. After donating or sharing, recite a simple family dua together: “O Allah, put more Barakah in what we still have.” This prayer teaches that blessings come not from how much we keep but from Allah’s favour upon what remains. You can also create a “gratitude moment” after giving. Sit together and name one blessing you still have, which trains the heart to see abundance rather than emptiness.

Spiritual Insight

The noble Quran speaks directly to the human fear that holds people back from giving, revealing that this feeling is a form of deception. Allah Almighty states in Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verse 268:

‘Satan threatens you with poverty and orders you to immorality, while Allah promises you forgiveness from Him and bounty. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing.’

This verse reveals that the whisper of poverty is not truth but deception. Parents can explain that every time we give, we silence that whisper and choose faith instead of fear. The Holy Prophet Muhammad  taught that giving is a source of power and protection. It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 4210, that the Holy Prophet Muhammad  said:

‘Charity extinguishes sins just as water extinguishes fire.’

This Hadith shows that giving is not weakness but power. Parents should model serenity after donating or sharing, saying, “See, Allah always takes care of us.” This helps children believe that provision is not limited by what they see but guided by divine generosity. By transforming this fear into faith, the child learns that every act of giving is an investment in unseen blessings; a trade that always returns with more love, peace, and Barakah
