How Do I Show That Gratitude Increases Barakah In Our Home?

Parenting Perspective

Barakah is the unseen increase that makes small things feel abundant, simple meals taste rich, and ordinary days feel calm. Teaching children that shukr (gratitude) brings Barakah means helping them see how Allah Almighty multiplies goodness in quiet, invisible ways. When parents live gratitude openly, children begin to notice how peace and joy rise wherever thanks is spoken sincerely.

Make Gratitude a Visible Habit

Barakah grows when gratitude is voiced, not just felt. Let your children hear you say Alhamdulillah in different moments after meals, during rest, when something goes right. Explain gently, ‘When we thank Allah, He puts extra goodness in what we already have.’ For example, when dinner feels especially peaceful or laughter fills the room, say aloud, ‘Do you feel how happy our home is today? That is the Barakah Allah adds when we thank Him.’

Show Barakah Through Small Examples

Children understand best through what they see. If a meal feeds more people than expected or money stretches further than planned, point it out: ‘We only cooked a little, but everyone ate that is Barakah.’ Or when an item lasts longer than usual, remark, ‘Allah is keeping this strong for us because we say Alhamdulillah.’ These small explanations connect everyday events to divine generosity

Use Gratitude to Calm Discontent

When children feel frustrated about what they lack, use gratitude to restore peace. Say, ‘Let us thank Allah for what we already have He will make it even better.’ Help them notice how saying thanks softens the heart and lifts the mood. This makes gratitude emotional relief, not a rule. You can make this a family habit: pausing together when someone feels upset, taking a deep breath, and naming one blessing aloud.

Explain that sharing blessings multiplies them. When a child gives away a toy, food, or time, say, ‘You just added Barakah to what you have.’ It helps them see that gratitude is not passive; it invites increase. Encourage small acts of generosity as living proof that Allah Almighty expands what is used for good.

Model Contentment and Calm

Barakah flourishes in content homes. When parents respond to hardship with patience and to ease with thankfulness, children learn that gratitude draws Allah’s help in all conditions. Even during difficulty, saying Alhamdulillah with sincerity plants spiritual calm. They begin to understand that Barakah is not only about more possessions but about more peace

Spiritual Insight

Islam beautifully ties gratitude to increase. Allah Almighty promises that thankfulness brings expansion in wealth, time, health, love, and serenity. This divine pattern is mentioned directly in the Quran.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Ibrahim (14), Verses 7:

‘And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed: “If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favour]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe…’

This verse is a living reminder that Barakah begins the moment gratitude is expressed. Parents can explain: ‘When we say Alhamdulillah and mean it, Allah Himself promises to give us more more peace, more love, more ease.’ Reflective insight: ‘Every time our home feels gentle and joyful, that is the increase Allah brings when He is pleased with our thankfulness.’

It is recorded in Riyadh Al Saliheen, Hadith 140, that the holy Prophet Muhammad  said:

‘Allah is pleased with His servant who eats food and praises Him for it, or drinks drink and praises Him for it.’

This Hadith shows that even the simplest act of gratitude can invite divine pleasure. Parents can say, ‘See how the Prophet  told us that when we thank Allah even for one meal or one drink, Allah becomes pleased, and when Allah is pleased, He blesses our home.’

Children learn that Barakah is the fragrance of gratitude unseen yet felt everywhere. A family that gives thanks together experiences calm in hardship and joy in simplicity.
