Parenting Perspective
Young children naturally find it difficult to grasp the significance of invisible needs, such as the cost of utilities like electricity or water. To bridge this conceptual gap effectively, parents must translate these abstract expenses into tangible, relatable consequences that directly affect the child’s daily life and comfort.
Making Abstract Needs Concrete
The most effective approach involves creating a direct link between the utility and the enjoyment the child derives from it. Rather than simply stating a bill needs payment, illustrate the function it serves. You might explain, ‘The electricity that powers the light under which we read our bedtime stories and the current that keeps our food cold and safe in the refrigerator requires payment to remain active. If we neglect this, we cannot enjoy our prepared meals or the comforting warmth in the winter.’ This direct connection transforms the abstract spending into a visible necessity for sustaining their secure environment.
Integrating Children into Financial Responsibility
Involving children gently in the ritual of fulfilling these obligations can powerfully reinforce the lesson. Allowing them to participate, perhaps by pressing the payment button online or helping to carefully note down the meter readings, gives them a sense of ownership over the household’s smooth operation. While performing this, articulate the priority clearly: ‘This is how we ensure our home continues to function well and keeps us safe; treats and new toys are considered only after we have looked after these vital requirements first.’ This practical demonstration builds a foundational understanding of financial sequencing without causing undue anxiety.
It is vital to frame this responsibility positively. Encourage language such as, ‘We are fulfilling our duty in taking excellent care of the provisions Allah Almighty has granted us within our home.’ By doing this, the child begins to perceive responsibility not as a restrictive burden, but as an honour and an act of care. Over time, this consistent pattern of behaviour teaches them that behind every domestic comfort and every enjoyable experience there is an element of thoughtful discipline and an underlying current of gratitude.
Spiritual Insight
The concept of prioritising essential needs—particularly those related to sustaining life and property—over mere desires is deeply embedded within Islamic jurisprudence and ethics. This principle guides parents in nurturing a child’s character to align with the Creator’s pleasure.
The directive against squandering and the command to fulfil obligations situate utility payments and household management firmly within the realm of religious duty. Responsible stewardship of what one possesses is a direct reflection of gratitude to the Giver of all sustenance.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Isra (17), Verse 27:
‘And do not waste [resources], indeed the wasteful are brothers of the devils…’
This verse establishes a clear moral and spiritual polarity: diligent use and payment for essential services align with piety, whereas heedlessness and wastefulness lead toward deviation. Parents can use this foundation to explain that settling necessary accounts promptly is an intrinsic part of being grateful servants of Allah Almighty. Ignoring such duties, even small ones, contributes to a culture of wastefulness that the Quran strongly discourages, thereby framing the payment of the electricity bill as an act of worship that safeguards blessings.
The spiritual dimension further emphasises the manner in which these responsibilities are executed. The Islamic ideal encourages not just completion, but perfection in action.
It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 3170, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Allah has prescribed Al-Ihsan (proficiency) in all things.’
Fulfilling obligations such as managing household bills with care, accuracy, and punctuality constitutes excellence (ihsan) in daily life. Teaching children this principle connects the mundane chore of bill payment to a lofty spiritual benchmark. When a child understands that attending to the necessary upkeep of their home is, in itself, a path to earning divine love through ihsan, the motivation shifts profoundly from external compliance to internal commitment.
By consistently demonstrating that fulfilling necessities reliably secures and maintains the blessings (like light, warmth, and safe food), children learn that needs are given precedence not to arbitrarily limit their fun, but because they form the protective foundation upon which all sustainable joy and ease are built. This understanding shapes them into balanced individuals who seek contentment in the right place—in duty and devotion—rather than in the fleeting acquisition of material wants.
