How do I model reliance on Allah Almighty while still working hard? 

Parenting Perspective 

To effectively model reliance on Allah Almighty, or Tawakkal while simultaneously demonstrating a strong work ethic, parents must illustrate the dynamic interplay between earnest personal endeavour and complete trust in the Divine plan. It is crucial to show children that striving diligently is an act of worship, but the outcome rests entirely in the hands of Allah Almighty. This involves actively demonstrating a balanced approach in daily life, which is perhaps the most potent form of teaching. 

Demonstrating Active Trust in Allah Almighty 

When confronting any difficulty or preparing for any significant undertaking, explain the process clearly to your children. Articulate that you are applying your maximum capabilities, seeking knowledge, and executing the necessary steps with precision. However, immediately follow this by articulating your trust in Allah Almighty’s decree (Qadar). For instance, when preparing for an examination or seeking a new opportunity, one must study assiduously or apply thoroughly, yet simultaneously express to the children: ‘‘We have done everything within our ability, and now we place the result, whatever it may be, in Allah Almighty’s keeping, for He knows what is best for us.’‘ This prevents the development of either complacency or crippling anxiety. 

Linking Effort to Faith 

Reliance upon Allah Almighty must never be interpreted by children as synonymous with passivity or laziness. On the contrary, the Islamic understanding of Tawakkual is predicated upon proactive, conscientious effort. We are commanded to tie our camel before trusting Allah Almighty to guard it. By exhibiting this active faith, you teach children that their hard work is the means (Asbab) through which Allah Almighty channels His blessings and support. Therefore, the parent models the active engagement required by faith, affirming that effort is the visible expression of their invisible conviction. 

Managing Outcomes with Grace 

A critical element of this modelling is how parents react to the final outcome. If efforts are rewarded, you should express gratitude (Shukr) to Allah Almighty first and foremost, acknowledging His favour. If the result is not what was anticipated, you should demonstrate patience (Sabr) and acceptance, genuinely framing the setback as part of the wisdom of Allah Almighty and a redirection towards something potentially better or as a test of character. This teaches resilience, which is a fundamental component of a life lived under Divine Providence. 

Spiritual Insight 

The concept of balancing human action with Divine reliance is a profound theological principle in Islam, forming the bedrock of a stable and meaningful life. It addresses the human desire for control while grounding the heart in the reality of creation. 

The Quranic Mandate for Acceptance 

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Tawbah (9), Verse 51: 

‘Never will we be struck except by what Allah Almighty has decreed for us; He is our protector.’ 

This Quranic verse powerfully encourages a dual state: the active pursuit of righteous goals, followed by the tranquil acceptance of the decision of Allah Almighty. We are obliged to exert ourselves fully in seeking what is good and avoiding what is harmful, yet the heart must remain unattached to the specific outcome or result that we may want, accepting that the measure of protection and benefit is fixed by the Creator. The true protector is Allah Almighty, and our safety lies in acknowledging this ultimate reality above all else. 

The Prophetic Example of Action and Trust 

The tradition of holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ provides the most perfect illustration of such a balanced outlook and practice of faith in the decree of Allah Almighty. His life demonstrated unparalleled exertion in spreading the Message of Islam while simultaneously placing absolute confidence in Allah Almighty’s ability to grant success. 

It is recorded in Jami Tirmidhi, Hadith 2517, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 

‘Tie your camel and then put your trust in Allah Almighty.’ 

This concise yet profound Hadith captures the essence of Tawakkal. The instruction to tie your camel  symbolises taking all necessary, practical steps within one’s capacity, while  ‘‘put your trust in Allah Almighty completes the spiritual equation, acknowledging that the ultimate outcome rests entirely in His hands. 

For parents, this Hadith offers the perfect teaching model. It shows children that faith and effort are not opposites but partners. We work, plan, and prepare in life, studying for exams, seeking jobs, or striving to improve our lives, because doing so is obedience to commandments from Allah Almighty on how to live. Allah Almighty Yet after doing our best, we entrust the results to Him, knowing that only His will brings success or redirection. 

Genuine reliance on Allah Almighty is not a passive resignation but an active source of strength derived from acknowledging the Omnipotence of Allah Almighty. When a person truly believes that Allah Almighty is sufficient for them (as noted in Surah Al Talaq), they can become less fearful, and their mental energy is freed from worry about uncontrollable elements. This spiritual freedom permits an even greater focus on the quality of one’s own work and character. Thus, modelling Tawakkal means showing children that faith allows for maximal effort without maximal anxiety, grounded in the certainty of the perfect wisdom of all decisions from Allah Almighty.
