How Do I Stop Them from Thinking Money Comes from Parents Alone? 

Parenting Perspective 

It is a common and understandable misconception for children to associate financial security solely with their parents’ visible employment. To gently redirect this perception, parents must actively emphasise that while parental effort is necessary, the actual granting of sustenance and wealth originates entirely from Allah Almighty. 

Shifting the Focus from Source to Giver 

The primary task is to teach the children the distinction between the means and the Ultimate Giver. While parents certainly work hard to earn wages, those wages, the job itself, and the opportunity to work are all ultimately blessings granted by Allah Almighty. Encourage open conversations where you state clearly: ‘We work hard at our jobs because Allah Almighty has commanded us to strive, but the salary we receive is a provision from Allah Almighty, Who enables us to earn it.’ This frames parental labour as an act of obedience rather than the sole generator of wealth. 

Discussing Provision During Financial Changes 

A robust way to cement this understanding is by discussing financial fluctuations with calm transparency. If the family experiences a period where parents face job challenges or financial difficulty, this is not a time to hide the reality, but to showcase Tawakkul in action. Explain that when a job is lost, it is a change in the means, but Allah Almighty remains the True Provider. Discussing how blessings might arrive from unexpected avenues,perhaps through the generosity of a relative, an unexpected opportunity, or a reduction in unnecessary expenses,demonstrates that Allah Almighty can and does provide through channels parents do not control. This reinforces the concept that provision is flexible and divinely managed. 

Highlighting Diverse Forms of Support 

Help children recognise that provision is not solely measured in currency. A child who is deeply loved, protected from harm, and provided with a nurturing home environment is receiving immense material and emotional provision from Allah Almighty through the parents. Frame your dedication to them not as an obligation that earns money, but as Allah Almighty providing you the means and motivation to care for them excellently. This teaches them to look beyond the bank balance and appreciate the holistic provision Allah Almighty sends their way. 

Spiritual Insight 

The Islamic worldview fundamentally anchors all sustenance and fortune in the Divine Will, categorising worldly earnings merely as temporary channels through which a necessary reality,Divine Provision,flows. 

The Sovereignty Over Sustenance 

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al-Isra (17), Verse 30: 

‘Indeed, your Lord expands provision for whom He wills and restricts it. Indeed, He is ever, concerning His servants, Expert in Vision.’ 

This verse clearly establishes Allah Almighty’s absolute sovereignty over the distribution of Rizq. The expansion or restriction of worldly goods is entirely within His Decree. For the child, this means that the flow of money to the parents is not a guaranteed automatic function of their effort, but a specific allocation determined by Allah Almighty’s perfect plan. He knows the needs and the spiritual benefit derived from both abundance and restraint for every individual servant. This reinforces that parental status does not dictate Divine favour; it is Allah Almighty’s Wisdom that governs all outcomes. 

The Decree of Predetermined Sustenance 

The Prophetic tradition reinforces that the sustenance a person receives in this world is fundamentally predetermined, regardless of the channel through which it arrives. 

It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith number 2144, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 

‘The Holy Spirit (Jibril) has inspired in my heart that no soul will die until it has received all that was decreed for it of provision, so fear Allah Almighty and be moderate in seeking provision. Take that which is permissible and leave that which is forbidden.’ 
’ 

This teaching is paramount. It assures the child that their essential needs are secured by a Heavenly decree. While parents are encouraged to exert themselves in lawful means to obtain that decree, the ultimate guarantee lies with Allah Almighty. If a parent’s source dries up, it simply means Allah Almighty is directing that destined provision through a different, perhaps unforeseen, route. This removes the dangerous illusion of parental infallibility in financial matters and places trust firmly where it belongs: with the Creator. 

Understanding that all wealth is loaned by Allah Almighty encourages a spirit of generosity and detachment from materialism in children. If they see that the source is infinite (Allah Almighty) rather than finite (the parents’ salary), they are more likely to appreciate their blessings and look outward to help others, knowing that assisting others does not deplete the ultimate source of provision. This is a profound spiritual preparation for a life lived with financial integrity and reliance.
