Parenting Perspective
When a teenager becomes fixated on a heart rate number they perceive as unlucky, they are experiencing a blend of health anxiety and magical thinking. Your task is to provide a calm, logical framework that separates biological data from superstitious fear.
Decoupling Biological Data from Magical Thinking
It is common for an anxious teen to seek certainty by monitoring their body, only to feel panicked when the result triggers a superstitious association. You can help by explaining that a heart rate is a dynamic, ever-changing measurement influenced by movement, caffeine, or even the anxiety of checking itself. A number like ‘13’ or ‘4’ in a sequence has no metaphysical power over their health or their future. By focusing on the science of how the heart functions, you provide an objective reality that counters the internal narrative of ‘bad luck’. This allows the teenager to see the pulse as a sign of life rather than a sign of doom.
Interrupting the Compulsion to Re-check
The strongest tool a teen can use is the decision to stop checking once the ‘unlucky’ number appears. You might suggest a dialogue where they acknowledge the thought: ‘I feel scared because of that number, but I am choosing to trust my body to keep me safe without me watching it’. Encourage them to set the watch or pulse-checker aside for at least an hour to prove to their brain that nothing catastrophic happens when they stop monitoring. This proactive approach builds their tolerance for uncertainty and breaks the cycle of seeking reassurance through numbers. Over time, their confidence in their physical health will grow as they realise, they are secure regardless of the digits on a screen.
Spiritual Insight
Beyond strategies and conversations, there lies the deeper nourishment that faith offers. noble Quran and Sunnah remind us that our life span and our health are in the hands of Allah Almighty alone, and no number or omen has the power to benefit or harm us. Turning to religion helps a teenager understand that true security is found in trusting the Creator of the heart.
Allah Almighty states in noble Quran at Surah Ar-Ra’d (13), Verse 28:
‘Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah Almighty hearts are assured.’
This reminds us that the heart finds its true rhythm and peace through spiritual connection rather than constant physical monitoring. It encourages the teenager to shift their focus from the ‘unlucky’ number to the remembrance of the One who keeps the heart beating. Every beat is a gift and a sign of His mercy, not a source of fear.
It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 5757, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stated:
‘There is no omen (Tiyarah), but the best of it is optimism (Fa’l).’
This teaches us to reject superstitious fears and instead maintain a hopeful outlook. Supporting a teenager through health-related ‘magical thinking’ requires a balance of practical grounding and spiritual trust. By helping them stay connected to faith, you empower them to find peace in the face of uncertainty. Remind them that Allah Almighty is the ultimate Guardian. Every step taken to trust Him over a superstitious thought is an act of courage and worship. Your love provides the stability they need to navigate these emotions with grace. Helping your child find balance is a beautiful way to show love today.
