How can a child recognize doomscrolling as a ritual to numb their internal anxiety?

Parenting Perspective

Doom-scrolling refers to the compulsive behaviour of consuming negative content on social media. For many children, this is a repetitive ritual used to numb internal anxiety. When a child feels overwhelmed, they turn to devices to distract their mind. This provides a temporary escape from reality but leads to restlessness. Recognizing this pattern is the first step toward emotional control. It is important to observe if scrolling feels like a choice or an uncontrollable urge. Parents can help by guiding children to notice how they feel before they pick up their phone.

Identifying the Compulsive Loop

A child can recognize this ritual by noticing the physical sensations that occur. If they feel a trance-like state while scrolling, it is likely they are using the screen as a shield against their own thoughts. This behaviour is accompanied by a loss of track of time. By identifying triggers that lead to this state, the child can begin to see scrolling as a response to stress. It is a way of avoiding the discomfort of anxiety. Parents should encourage their child to be honest about whether content makes them feel better.

Moving Toward Conscious Awareness

Breaking the cycle requires moving from passive consumption to conscious awareness. They can handle the urge by asking why they are opening an app. If the goal is to stop a difficult emotion, they can find a physical activity that provides a grounding experience. Shifting focus to the real world allows the mind to settle. It is helpful to replace the digital ritual with a productive habit. By building a steady routine, the child can develop a resilient character. Real life offers more value than digital noise.

Spiritual Insight

Beyond strategies, there lies the deeper nourishment faith offers. noble Quran and teachings remind us that raising children is about nurturing hearts that remember Allah Almighty. This connection provides a sense of security.

Allah Almighty states in noble Quran at Surah Al Ra’ad (13), Verse 28:

‘Verily, in the remembrance of Allah Almighty do hearts find rest.’

This reminds us that tranquillity is found through a connection with the Creator. When a child seeks a distraction on a screen, they are searching for peace. Remembrance provides a lasting sense of safety.

It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 6407, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘There are two blessings which many people lose: health and free time.’

This teaches us that time is a precious gift. Doom-scrolling wastes this gift. By being mindful of how they spend their moments, a child can focus on growth. Trusting in the plan of Allah Almighty helps them let go of distractions.

Handling the urge to compulsively scroll requires practical boundaries and spiritual anchoring. By teaching a child to recognize their anxiety, parents help them break the cycle of repetitive actions. Faith offers the ultimate sense of security. This dual approach ensures the child feels supported and capable of navigating a complex world with a firm mind. Parents who model trust provide the best example. Success is achieved through effort and a heart connected to the Divine. Reliance on the mercy of Allah Almighty provides comfort. With a firm heart, a young person stays true to values. Success is certain with Him. Trust Allah Almighty always. Peace is with believers.
