Honouring Life Through Empathy 

Begin by stating a fundamental truth: ‘Animals are unique and valuable creations of Allah Almighty. They feel hunger, pain, and fear just as we humans do.’ It is important to show, rather than just tell, how treating them with honour and respect—both throughout their life and during the process of food preparation—is a way of dignifying their existence and fulfilling our divine responsibility as stewards of the Earth. Explain that the Islamic method of slaughter is designed specifically to minimise pain and fear, emphasising that mercy is paramount even at the point of taking life. 

Lessons in Prophetic Compassion 

Parents should share age-appropriate stories that highlight the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ’s profound compassion towards animals. Recounting the widely known story of the cat that drank from his vessel, or the instance of the camel that wept before him due to mistreatment, provides powerful, moving examples. Explain clearly that Islam mandates mercy (Rahmah) at every stage of life, extending this virtue even to those creatures from which we derive benefit. Instilling this compassion for animals does not denote weakness; rather, it actively strengthens our soul and deepens our humanity. 

Spiritual Insight 

The Islamic worldview places animals within a spiritual framework, recognising them not as mere tools or commodities, but as distinct, sentient creations that form communities of their own within Allah Almighty’s perfect design. 

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Anam (6), Verse 38: 

‘There is no creature on the earth nor bird that flies with its wings except that they are communities like you. We have not neglected in the Book a thing. Then to their Lord they will be gathered…’ 

This profound verse fundamentally teaches that animals are not simply human property; they exist as ‘communities like you’ within Allah’s meticulously ordered design. Teaching this particular verse helps children grasp that extending mercy towards animals is not an optional kindness, but a necessary form of obedience and submission to the Creator’s universal justice. They will learn that every creature has rights that must be acknowledged and respected. 

It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 3482, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 

‘A woman was punished because she imprisoned a cat until it died. She neither fed it nor let it feed upon the creatures of the earth.’ 

This hadith serves as a powerful, unambiguous reminder that cruelty or negligence towards animals carries significant spiritual consequences and accountability before Allah Almighty.
