Parenting Perspective
When relatives express disapproval or belittle your family’s established traditions, it can be hurtful, especially when those traditions are intended to preserve warmth, faith, and connection within your home. The most effective strategy is to respond with grace and conviction, not with defensiveness or argumentation.
Responding with Calm Confidence
The power of any family tradition lies in its ability to nurture togetherness, gratitude, and the remembrance of Allah Almighty. If others perceive your traditions as outdated or unnecessary, your calm, confident conduct will speak louder and more clearly than any debate. A parent’s primary goal is to let their children witness that they do not feel the need to justify their love or faith; they simply live it with dignity.
Explaining the ‘Why’ Gently
Instead of engaging in an argument about the validity of the practice, simply and gently explain the underlying intention. Use statements such as, ‘We do this because it reminds us of our blessings and gives us a moment of quiet together,’ or, ‘It is a custom that makes our family feel close and connected to our values.’ Keep the tone soft but steady. This approach teaches your child a valuable lesson: that dignity does not require confrontation. You can also extend a small, gentle invitation to the relatives—for example, sharing the story behind a cherished dish or offering them a small, non-essential role in the preparation—without ever forcing their participation. Your focus is not on changing others’ opinions, but on protecting the spirit of what your immediate family holds dear.
Prioritising Intention Over Approval
It is important to remind your children that preserving core family values is not an act of stubbornness, but a living expression of gratitude and conviction. Teach them that differences in expression do not have to divide hearts and that traditions carried out with sincerity carry an inner peace, even if they are misunderstood by others. The true goal is not to seek approval from others; it is to achieve inner harmony rooted firmly in pure intention.
Spiritual Insight
Islam acknowledges the natural diversity among people and provides wisdom for maintaining spiritual integrity and peace when faced with external judgment or dismissal.
In moments when external opinions challenge the sincere practices of the home, the Islamic tradition provides a strong anchor, reminding believers that righteousness and internal sincerity far outweigh public approval or superficial consensus on customs.
The noble Quran teaches that diversity in customs and traditions is a natural part of Allah’s plan, yet it clearly defines what holds true value.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Hujurat (49), Verse 13:
‘ O mankind! Indeed, We created you from a male and a female, and made you into peoples and tribes so that you may know one another. Indeed, the most honourable of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you.’
This verse reminds the family that diversity—whether in customs, languages, or family traditions—is part of Allah’s divine design. Families are naturally free to express gratitude and love differently. The crucial teaching here is that what truly matters is righteousness (Taqwa) and sincerity of intention. Parents can teach their child that traditions grounded in goodness and remembrance are an act of devotion, not a subject for social competition.
The teachings of the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ offer profound wisdom for handling situations where others are needlessly critical of your choices.
It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 3976. that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘ Part of a person’s goodness in Islam is his leaving alone that which does not concern him.’
This Hadith provides a perfect principle for when others dismiss your family’s way of doing things. Rather than reacting defensively, parents should model quiet integrity and spiritual maturity—showing their children that honouring what genuinely concerns them, and letting go of needless debate, is a sign of deep faith. By modelling calm respect and quiet conviction when others disagree, parents successfully protect their home’s inner peace.
