Parenting Perspective
If a child exhibits a fear of losing love the moment they cease to over-give, it is a clear sign they have started to equate self-sacrifice with their own acceptability and worth. This is a fragile foundation for self-esteem. Your primary role is to gently but consistently untangle this connection and reassure them that love, both yours and Allah’s, is unconditional.
Affirming Unconditional Love and Worth
Your words are the most powerful tool for rebuilding their sense of security. Make it a regular practice to affirm their inherent value, independent of their actions. Say to them often and sincerely, ‘I love you for who you are, not for what you do for me or for others’. This simple but profound statement helps them internalise that their worth is not a commodity to be traded for acts of service. It teaches them that they are loved for their being, not just for their giving. This is the foundation of secure attachment and emotional resilience.
Redefining Strength as Honest Self-Awareness
When you see your child saying ‘yes’ to a request while their body language shows they are tired or reluctant, it is an opportunity for gentle guidance. Instead of praising the act of giving, praise their honesty if they do express their limits. You could say, ‘Thank you for telling me you are tired. It was brave and honest of you to share your feelings’. This powerful shift in focus teaches them that you value their emotional honesty more than their compliance. It reassures them that setting a boundary does not lead to a withdrawal of love, but can in fact strengthen the trust between you.
Modelling Sustainable Affection
Children learn what they live. They need to see that setting boundaries does not diminish love in your own life. When you decline a request, do so calmly and without guilt, explaining your reasoning in a way they can understand. For example, ‘I am saying no to this today because I need to rest. This way, I can be a more patient and kind mother to you tomorrow’. This demonstrates that healthy love is not rooted in exhaustion but in sincerity and sustainability. They learn that true affection is steady and unconditional, not a fragile reward for self-neglect.
Spiritual Insight
The most powerful antidote to the fear of losing human love is to connect a child’s heart to the ultimate source of all love: Allah Almighty. Islamic teachings provide profound reassurance that true affection and acceptance are divinely granted based on faith and sincerity, not on the impossible task of pleasing everyone all the time.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Maryam (19), Verse 96:
‘Indeed, those who believe and do righteous deeds — the Most Merciful will appoint for them affection…’
This verse holds a beautiful promise. The word used for affection, wudd, signifies a special, tender love. Explain to your child that this love is a gift that Allah Himself places in the hearts of others for those who are sincere in their faith and actions. It is not something that needs to be earned through constant self-sacrifice. This helps them shift their focus from seeking approval from people to seeking the pleasure of the Most Merciful, with the trust that He will take care of their hearts.
The process by which this divine love is established is described in a beautiful hadith.
It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 7485, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘When Allah loves a servant, He calls Gabriel and says: Verily, I love so-and-so, so love him. Gabriel then loves him and makes an announcement in the heavens, saying: Allah loves so-and-so, therefore you should love him. So all the dwellers of the heavens love him, and then he is granted acceptance on earth.’
This hadith paints a powerful picture of how true acceptance works. It does not begin with us trying to win favour on earth; it begins with Allah’s love in the heavens. You can explain, ‘The most important thing is to have a pure and sincere heart for Allah. If He loves you, He will ensure that good people love you too’. This completely reorients a child’s motivation. Their goal is no longer to avoid displeasing people, but to please Allah, who is the source of all love.
