What should I say when they ask why others eat food we avoid?

Parenting Perspective

When a child asks, ‘Why do our neighbours eat food we are not allowed to?’, their question is rarely a challenge to their faith. It is an honest and intelligent attempt to understand the world and their unique place within it. This curiosity provides a crucial opportunity to deepen their understanding of their Islamic identity while simultaneously nurturing a sincere respect for others.

Explain Obedience as an Act of Love

Frame your explanation around the positive concept of devotion. You could say, ‘Every group of people has guidance that they follow. Our guidance comes directly from Allah in the noble Quran. We follow His rules for eating because we love and trust Him, and we know He wants what is best for us’. This presents obedience not as a restriction, but as a loving expression of faith. It helps your child see their dietary choices as a special connection between them and their Creator, rather than as a barrier between them and other people.

Instil Conviction Without Arrogance

It is vital to teach children how to balance firm conviction with a soft and humble heart. You might explain, ‘We choose to eat Halal because Allah has told us it is pure and good for our bodies and souls. This is our path. Other people have different paths, and Allah is the judge of all people based on their own knowledge and intentions’. This clear distinction prevents the growth of self-righteousness.

Guide Their Observations with Wisdom

When your child inevitably observes someone consuming something that is not Halal, use the moment to teach them the proper internal and external response. Explain that our duty is not to lecture or mock, but to be grateful for the guidance we have been given. Coach them to develop an internal monologue of gratitude: a quiet, sincere ‘Alhamdulillah for Islam’ in their heart. This response nurtures a sense of thankfulness for their own blessings while maintaining complete respect for the other person, embodying the gentle and dignified character of a Muslim.

Spiritual Insight

The divine laws of Islam (Shari’ah) are a profound manifestation of Allah’s mercy (rahmah) and wisdom. The boundaries He has established, including those related to food, are not intended to constrain humanity but to protect and purify it. These rules are a roadmap for a wholesome life, designed to benefit a believer’s spiritual, physical, and ethical well-being.

Allah Almighty has clearly delineated what is permissible and what is forbidden, explaining that these rules are for our own benefit.

He states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Maidah (5), Verse 3:

‘Forbidden to you (for food) are carrion, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah…’

This verse establishes clear and unambiguous boundaries. You can explain to your child, ‘Allah is our Creator, and He knows the nature of everything He has created. He gives us these rules out of His infinite care for us, protecting us from things that could harm our bodies or our souls’.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught that a key sign of a sincere believer is their diligence in staying far from not only that which is clearly forbidden, but also that which is doubtful.

It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 3984, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘That which is lawful is clear and that which is unlawful is clear, and between the two of them are doubtful matters about which many people do not know. Thus he who avoids doubtful matters clears himself in regard to his religion and his honor…’

This profound hadith introduces the concept of wara’, or cautious piety. You can explain, ‘We follow the clear rules and stay away from unclear things because we want to protect our faith and our honour. It is like choosing to walk on a clean, clear path instead of near a muddy ditch’. This reframes adherence to Halal rules as an act of self-respect and a way of preserving the purity of one’s heart.
