How can I prepare my child for extra hydration needs during exams and stress?

During exam season, children often forget the simplest acts of self-care. They may revise for hours, unaware that their mental sharpness depends as much on hydration as it does on knowledge. For a parent, the goal is not just to hand over a water bottle, but to anchor hydration as a key part of their child’s emotional and mental preparation.

Explain to your child that drinking water helps the brain to ‘think clearly’. You can use an analogy: when the body lacks water, the mind can become like a dusty room where everything feels heavier and harder to see. Before each study session, you can place a glass of water on your child’s desk and say, ‘This is your first step to thinking clearly.’ Over time, this small ritual ties the act of hydration to a feeling of calmness and confidence

Plan Hydration Around Their Study Rhythm 

Instead of reminding them to drink at random times, help them to create ‘study-hydration cycles’. Encourage them to have a drink every time they finish a chapter or a practice paper. This structure helps to prevent the fatigue of long study stretches and can stabilise their energy levels. It turns hydration into a natural part of their workflow

Children rarely realise that stress drains the body of water more quickly. When they are anxious, their heart rate and breathing can increase, leading to faster fluid loss. Help them to recognise the signs in themselves, such as a dry mouth or difficulty concentrating. Calmly saying, ‘Your body is asking for water in the same way your mind is asking for a rest,’ can build their emotional and physical awareness

Model Calm Self-Care 

During exam season, children often mirror their parents’ anxiety. If they see you stressed and skipping meals, they will normalise that behaviour. However, if they see you drink water calmly, take deep breaths, and speak with patience, they will subconsciously imitate that rhythm. Your own steadiness can become their silent tutor in self-care

Spiritual Insight 

Islam views the care of the body as part of the care of the soul. During stressful times, looking after oneself is not an indulgence; it is a form of gratitude (shukr) for the body that Allah has entrusted to us. Teaching a child to stay hydrated during exams is, therefore, more than just science; it is training in balance and thankfulness. 

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Faatir (35), Verse 28: 

‘…The fear of Allah (Almighty) from His servants is (as at its highest form) with the scholars; indeed, Allah (Almighty) it is the Most Cherished and the Most Forgiving.’ 

This verse connects the pursuit of knowledge with a sense of awe and humility. When a child learns that their studies and even their small acts of self-care are all under the gaze of Allah, they can begin to approach their learning as an act of worship. 

It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 5199, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 

‘Your body has a right over you.’ 

This simple, profound reminder shows that looking after our physical needs is not separate from our spirituality. When your child takes a sip of water before studying, you can remind them that it is an act of honouring the trust that Allah has given them: the body, the mind, and the opportunity to learn. Encouraging hydration during exams thus becomes an act of integrated faith, teaching your child that spiritual strength and academic success both thrive on balance.
