How can I explain why other families’ relaxed food habits may not be safe?

Parenting Perspective

It is natural for children to observe and compare the different ways other families handle food with their own household rules. This curiosity often leads them to test boundaries as they try to understand why your standards might feel stricter than those of their friends. Acknowledging their observations without judgment is the key to keeping them open to your guidance.

Validate Their Observations

Begin by recognising their awareness and respecting their thought process. You could say, ‘I see that you have noticed your friends’ families do things differently. It is very observant of you to wonder why’. This validation shows that you respect their ability to think critically and are not dismissing their questions.

Explain Differences Without Criticism

Focus your explanation on the principles of safety rather than making direct comparisons. For example: ‘Every family has their own way of doing things. In our home, we follow these particular steps with our food to make sure everyone stays healthy and strong’. Highlighting the positive reasons for your rules, rather than the flaws in others, keeps the discussion constructive.

Give Relatable, Concrete Examples

Use simple scenarios to illustrate the unseen risks in the kitchen. You could explain, ‘If food is left out for too long, or if hands are not washed before cooking, tiny invisible germs can grow that might make people feel unwell. That is why we are always careful, even if others sometimes forget’. Concrete examples help children to understand cause and effect.

Encourage Empowered Choices

Invite your child to participate in the process by asking them questions. For instance, ‘What are some of the ways we make sure our food is safe for everyone in our family to eat?’ This approach fosters a sense of personal responsibility and ownership over the rules, helping them to internalise why these habits matter.

Spiritual Insight

In Islam, taking care of the body and the family by ensuring food is wholesome and safe is an act of faith and an expression of gratitude for the provisions of Allah Almighty.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verses 168:

‘O mankind consume from the Earth that which is lawful and pure (qualitative); and do not follow the footsteps of Satan; indeed, he is your blatant enemy.’

This verse underlines the importance of choosing food that is both ‘lawful’ (halal) and ‘good’ (tayyib), which includes being safe and pure. It reminds children that following thoughtful, safe practices is a conscious act of obedience and mindfulness, not just a set of arbitrary rules.

It is recorded in Riyad Al Saliheen, Hadith 1000, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘The strong believer is better and more beloved to Allah than the weak believer, while there is good in both. Strive for what benefits you, seek help from Allah, and do not be helpless.’

This hadith encourages believers to actively pursue what is beneficial for them. Maintaining good health through safe food practices is a way of building strength and is therefore an act beloved by Allah.

Explaining your family’s safety practices through both practical examples and Islamic guidance helps children understand that your rules are not random but are designed to be protective and are aligned with faith. This empowers them to make mindful, responsible choices, even when they observe different habits elsewhere.
