What should I do if my child forgets to wash hands after using the toilet and before meals?

Parenting Perspective

When a child forgets to wash their hands, it is rarely an act of deliberate defiance. More often, they are simply distracted, in a rush to return to their play, or they have not yet fully grasped the importance of washing away germs they cannot see. The goal for a parent is to gently and consistently build this crucial habit until it becomes as natural as breathing.

Begin with Calm and Gentle Reminders

Instead of scolding, which can create resistance, use gentle and positive cues to guide them back on track.

  • You could say, ‘Just before you sit down, let us do a quick handwash. Our delicious food tastes even better with clean hands’.

This approach frames the reminder as a positive step towards an enjoyable meal, not a punitive lecture.

Explain the ‘Why’ in Simple Terms

Children are more likely to adopt a habit when they understand the reason behind it. Keep the explanation short, simple, and concrete.

  • ‘When we use the toilet, tiny, invisible germs can stick to our hands. If those germs get into our mouths with our food, they can travel down to our tummies and make us feel unwell’.

This connects the action of handwashing directly to a tangible outcome: feeling well.

Create a Strong and Unbreakable Routine

Link the acts of using the toilet and washing hands so that they become one single, continuous step in your child’s mind.

  • The routine is simple: toilet, then wash, then eat
  • Make the process more appealing with colourful, nice-smelling soaps, fun posters near the sink, or a short song you sing together while they wash.

Consistency is what transforms a conscious effort into an unconscious habit.

Praise and Encourage Their Efforts

Positive reinforcement is a far more effective teacher than punishment. Whenever your child remembers to wash their hands without a reminder, acknowledge it with warm encouragement.

  • ‘I noticed you went straight to the sink to wash your hands after using the toilet. That was very responsible of you, and I am so proud’.

This praise helps the habit to stick much faster.

Model the Habit Yourself

Your child learns more from your actions than your words. If they consistently see you washing your hands after using the toilet and before every meal, they will internalise it as a normal, natural, and grown-up thing to do.

Spiritual Insight

In Islam, cleanliness (taharah) is not just a matter of worldly hygiene; it is a principle deeply rooted in faith (iman) and is considered a prerequisite for worship. Neglecting to wash one’s hands after using the toilet is therefore not just a health risk, but also a departure from the high standard of purity that Islam encourages.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Tawbah (9), Verses 108:

‘…And Allah (Almighty) loves those that seek inner purity.’

This verse reminds us that the act of purification, both physical and spiritual, is beloved by Allah. By teaching a child to be diligent about washing their hands after using the toilet, you are instilling in them a habit that is not only physically protective but also spiritually pleasing to their Creator.

It is recorded in Sunan Abu Dawood, Hadith 103, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘Whoever wakes from his sleep should not dip his hand into a utensil until he has washed it three times, for he does not know where his hand was during the night.’

This Hadith teaches a powerful lesson about taking precautions against even unseen and unknown impurities. If the Prophet ﷺ advised such care after sleeping, it underscores the even greater importance of washing hands after a known source of impurity, such as using the toilet.

By teaching your child this practice, you are not only protecting their physical health but also nurturing their faith. Over time, the simple habit of handwashing becomes a beautiful symbol of their respect for their body, their gratitude for their blessings, and their obedience to the guidance of Allah.
