What should I do when my child does not believe that invisible germs can cause sickness?

Parenting Perspective

It is perfectly understandable for a child to struggle with the concept of invisible germs. If they cannot see, feel, or hear something, it is natural for them to question its existence. As a parent, your role is to approach their scepticism with patience and creativity, helping them connect the unseen world of germs to the very real effects of illness. You can start by validating their doubts: ‘I know it seems strange that something we cannot see could make us feel unwell, but germs are real. Let us explore how they work together’. This opens the door to a discussion that respects their perspective while gently introducing the facts.

Use Simple Explanations and Analogies

To help your child grasp the concept, simplify the science behind germs and compare them to things they already understand.

‘Germs are tiny living beings, so small that we need a powerful microscope to see them. When they get inside our bodies, they can make us sick’.

‘When we touch things and then touch our mouths or food without washing our hands, we give these germs a free ride into our bodies’.

Using analogies can build a bridge from the known to the unknown.

‘Think of the wind. We cannot see it, but we can feel it on our skin and see the leaves moving. Germs are similar; we cannot see them, but we can feel the effects when we get a cold’.

‘It is also like the air we breathe. It is invisible but essential for us to live. Germs are also invisible but can have a powerful impact on our health’.

Demonstrate How Germs Spread

Sometimes, a visual demonstration is more effective than words. A simple, memorable experiment can illustrate the point powerfully.

‘Let us try a little experiment. If we put some glitter on our hands, it will represent the germs. Now, if you touch a book, a door handle, or my hand, what happens? The glitter spreads everywhere!’

‘Now, let us try washing our hands with soap and water. See how the glitter comes off? This is exactly how washing our hands removes real germs and stops them from spreading’.

This hands-on activity provides a concrete visual of how easily invisible particles can be transferred.

Emphasise Hygiene as a Protective Shield

Frame good hygiene practices not as chores, but as powerful tools your child can use to protect themselves.

‘Every time you wash your hands properly, you are washing away those invisible germs and stopping them from making you sick’.

‘Think of it like having a superpower. Soap and water are your shields against an invisible army of germs, keeping you strong and healthy!’

This empowers your child by showing them that their actions have a direct and positive impact on their well-being.

Spiritual Insight

In Islam, cleanliness is an essential principle that touches every aspect of a believer’s life. It is not just a physical duty to prevent illness but a profound spiritual act. Teaching your child about germs and the importance of hygiene is a practical way of instilling a core value of the faith.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verses 222:

‘“…Indeed, Allah (Almighty) loves those who repent excessively and those who adore their personal purification”.’

This verse beautifully connects the inner act of repentance with the outer act of physical purification. It shows that keeping our bodies clean is a beloved act in the sight of Allah. When you teach your child to wash their hands, you are also teaching them a practice that draws them closer to their Creator.

It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 223, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘Cleanliness is half of faith.’

This powerful Hadith elevates the status of cleanliness to being a cornerstone of a Muslim’s faith. It teaches us that hygiene is not merely a worldly matter for health but is integral to our spiritual state. By guiding your child to understand and defeat invisible germs, you are helping them fulfil a vital component of their faith and honour the body that Allah Almighty has entrusted to them.

By connecting these daily habits to their spiritual purpose, you teach your child that caring for their body is an act of worship, reflecting both physical protection and spiritual purity.
