Parenting Perspective
Children often do not understand why food needs to be reheated properly, particularly if it already looks, smells, and tastes acceptable. The main challenge is to explain that invisible bacteria can exist even in food that appears safe. You can begin by acknowledging their viewpoint: ‘I understand you feel the food is fine, but we must make sure it is heated all the way through to keep our bodies safe’. This validates their observation while introducing the idea of unseen risks.
Explain the Science Behind Reheating
To help your child understand the concept, you can simplify the science of bacteria growth on leftover food.
- ‘When we store food, very small germs can begin to grow on it. We cannot see them, but they can make us unwell if we do not heat the food enough to remove them’.
- ‘Heating food properly is like a special safety check. When it becomes hot all the way through, the heat gets rid of any germs and keeps us healthy’.
Connecting this idea to familiar routines can make it easier for them to grasp.
- ‘Just as we wash our hands with soap and water to remove germs before we eat, we need to heat our food to make sure any germs that might have grown on it are gone’.
Demonstrate Proper Reheating
Involve your child in the process of reheating food safely. Showing them how to check that food is steaming hot can make the lesson more practical and memorable.
- ‘Let us check if the soup is hot enough. Can you see the steam rising from it? That is a good sign that it is ready and safe to eat’.
- ‘It is important to stir the food while we heat it. This makes sure every single part gets hot, leaving no place for germs to hide’.
This hands-on approach helps to reinforce the lesson, allowing them to internalise safe food practices for the future.
Link the Action to Consequences
Help your child connect the failure to heat food properly with real, tangible outcomes.
- ‘If we do not reheat our food until it is hot enough, it could give us a sore tummy. By making sure it is properly heated, we protect ourselves from getting sick’.
- ‘When we eat food that has been heated correctly, we are taking good care of our health and can enjoy our meal without any worries’.
Clearly establishing this link between cause and effect helps them to understand why the rule is so important.
Spiritual Insight
In Islam, maintaining good health is considered a sacred trust from Allah Almighty. Consuming food in a safe manner is a vital part of honouring that trust. The simple act of reheating food thoroughly to prevent illness aligns with the important principle of caring for our bodies and the blessings Allah has provided.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verse 172:
‘ O you who are believers, consume from amongst that which is purified, which We (Allah Almighty) have provided for you; and be grateful to Allah (Almighty), if you (truly) worship (Allah Almighty) exclusively.’
This verse encourages believers to consume food that is both good and safe. By teaching your child to reheat food properly, you are guiding them in an act of gratitude and mindfulness, ensuring the meal they eat is both nourishing and free from harm.
It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 3632, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘None of you should eat or drink while reclining…’
While this Hadith directly addresses posture, it points to a broader principle of being mindful and respectful in all practices related to eating. It encourages an attitude of care and attention. By teaching your child to be diligent about reheating food, you are instilling this same spirit of carefulness, which aligns perfectly with Islamic teachings on health and safety.
Through these practices, your child learns not only the practical steps to stay healthy but also the deeper spiritual lesson of valuing and preserving the blessings Allah Almighty has provided.
