What should I do if my child eats food from a friend’s lunchbox that was not stored properly?

Parenting Perspective

It can be quite worrying when you discover your child has eaten food from a friend’s lunchbox that may not have been stored safely. Children are often guided by curiosity or hunger rather than an awareness of food safety. The first step is to respond with calm reassurance. You could say, ‘I understand you wanted to try your friend’s food, but it is important to know that food not stored correctly can sometimes make us feel unwell. Let us talk about why we need to be careful’. This approach acknowledges their action without blame and opens a conversation about food hygiene.

Explain the Risks of Improperly Stored Food

Help your child understand why consuming food that has been stored incorrectly can be harmful.

  • Explain that food not kept in a cool, clean environment can grow germs that are invisible to the naked eye. Eating these germs could lead to a stomach ache or other illnesses.
  • Mention that even if food looks and smells normal, harmful bacteria can still develop if it is not stored properly.

Using simple and relatable comparisons can make the concept easier for a child to grasp.

  • ‘Just as we wash our hands before eating to remove germs, food must also be kept in a clean and safe place to stay germ-free’.
  • ‘Think about how our toys get dirty if we leave them outside. In a similar way, food can get ‘dirty’ with germs if it is left out for too long’.

Encourage Thoughtful Choices

Teach your child how to make safer decisions if they find themselves in a similar situation in the future.

  • Let them know it is perfectly acceptable to politely decline or wait if they see food that has not been stored correctly. You could suggest they offer to share one of their own fresh and safe snacks instead.
  • Encourage them to ask their friend if the food has been kept in a refrigerator or a sealed container. This empowers them to ensure what they eat is safe.

Monitor for Symptoms

If your child has already eaten the food, it is important to observe them for any signs of foodborne illness, which may include:

  • Stomach cramps
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Diarrhoea

Should any of these symptoms appear, ensure your child stays well-hydrated. If their condition is concerning, it is always best to seek medical advice. This experience can also serve as a practical lesson, helping your child connect their bodily feelings to the importance of food safety.

Spiritual Insight

In Islam, protecting our health is considered an act of gratitude for the countless blessings Allah Almighty has given us. Ensuring that the food we consume is pure and safe is a reflection of responsibility and mindfulness, which are core values within the faith.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verse 172:

‘ O you who are believers, consume from amongst that which is purified, which We (Allah Almighty) have provided for you; and be grateful to Allah (Almighty), if you (truly) worship (Allah Almighty) exclusively.’

This verse serves as a reminder to consume that which is wholesome and pure. By teaching your child to be cautious about the food they eat, you are instilling habits that align with this divine guidance and help to protect their well-being.

It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 5678, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘There is no disease that Allah has created, except that He also has created its treatment.’

This Hadith highlights the importance of preserving health and preventing harm wherever possible. By guiding your child to make safe food choices, you are helping them adhere to the Prophet’s ﷺ teachings. This not only safeguards their physical health but also demonstrates gratitude for the blessings of provision and wellness that Allah Almighty has entrusted to them. Through these practices, you help your child cultivate responsibility, awareness, and a deep respect for their health.
