Clean Surfaces Thoroughly and Regularly 

To eliminate the risk of contamination, it is essential to clean surfaces thoroughly between different tasks. 

• Wipe down counters: After preparing food for your family, clean all surfaces with hot, soapy water before you handle any pet food or bowls. Likewise, after serving your pet, wipe down their feeding area to remove any spills or potential bacteria. 

• Disinfect between uses: For added safety, disinfect your food preparation surfaces with a food-safe disinfectant, especially after any accidental contact with pet items. Allow the surfaces to dry fully before using them again for human food. 

Keep Pet Bowls Clean and Sanitised 

Pet bowls require regular cleaning to prevent the build-up of harmful bacteria that could be transferred around the home. 

• Clean pet bowls daily: Wash your pet’s bowls every day with warm water and a mild dish soap. Afterwards, you can use a food-safe disinfectant to sanitise the bowls and kill any lingering germs. 

• Dry pet bowls thoroughly: After washing, dry the bowls completely with a clean towel or allow them to air-dry. This ensures they are free of excess moisture, which can harbour bacteria.

Everyone in the household, including children, should understand the importance of keeping pet and human food areas separate. Teach children why pet bowls should never be placed on kitchen counters. It may also be helpful to keep pets out of the main kitchen area while meals are being prepared to maintain clear boundaries and reduce the risk of contamination.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verses 222: 

‘“…Indeed, Allah (Almighty) loves those who repent excessively and those who adore their personal purification”.’ 

This verse highlights the importance of purification in all aspects of life. By keeping pet bowls and food preparation areas separate, you are practising this principle, ensuring that the food your family consumes remains clean and safe. In Islam, purity extends beyond the physical to our actions and how we care for our environment, including the spaces where we prepare our meals. 

It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 4184, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 

‘Cleanliness is half of faith.’ 

This Hadith serves as a powerful reminder of how deeply cleanliness is intertwined with faith. By ensuring that pet food bowls are separated from food preparation areas, you are fulfilling a spiritual practice and aligning your actions with the teachings of Islam.
