What stories from Islamic history show the harm of wastefulness in food?

Parenting Perspective

Children respond more deeply to stories than to instructions. A rule may be forgotten, but a story leaves an image that stays in their heart. When it comes to teaching about wastefulness in food, Islamic history offers lessons that combine faith, gratitude, and wisdom. By telling children these stories in simple, engaging ways, parents can connect morals to daily actions like finishing a meal or sharing with others.

Stories of Prophetic Respect for Food

When a child throws away half-eaten food, instead of scolding, you can share a story about how the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his companions treated food with great respect.

  • The Piece of Bread: Tell them: ‘Once, the Prophet ﷺ saw a piece of bread on the ground. He picked it up, wiped it clean, and ate it so it would not go to waste. He taught us that every bite of food is a blessing from Allah.’ A simple story like this makes children reflect and feel the importance of not wasting food, far more than a lecture would.

Cultivating Gratitude Through Perspective

Link these stories to daily life to make them relatable. If a child leaves food on their plate, you could say: ‘Do you know that in Islamic history, there were times when people had so little food they would tie stones to their stomachs from hunger? Imagine how much they would value the food we leave behind.’ This gives the child perspective and awakens gratitude without making them feel guilty.

The Example of Sharing

Parents can also use stories of the companions to show practical wisdom. Say to your child: ‘The companions lived with very little food, but they always shared with others. When they got even a small piece of bread, they broke it into parts so no one was left hungry.’ This can help children understand that wasting food is not just about throwing away leftovers, but also about forgetting the needs of others who may not have enough.

Spiritual Insight

The Quran speaks clearly about wastefulness, warning that it displeases Allah Almighty. By connecting Quranic verses and historical accounts, children understand that wastefulness harms not only the body and community but also their spiritual connection.

The Divine Dislike of Excess

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Aa’raaf (7), Verse 31:

‘O children of Adam, take (appropriate) measures to beautify yourself (before you appear) at any place of worship (for Prayer); and eat and drink and do not be extravagant (wasteful), as indeed, He (Allah Almighty) does not like extravagance.’

This verse reminds us that Allah Almighty has given food as a blessing, but excess and waste are acts that He dislikes. Parents can explain to children: ‘Allah does not like it when we throw food away, because wasting food shows that we forget how valuable His blessings are.’

The Blessing in Every Morsel

It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2033 b, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘When one of you eats, let him not wipe his hand until he has licked it or had it licked, for he does not know in which part of his food the blessing lies.’

This Hadith shows that food is full of blessing (barakah) from Allah, and wasting even a small part of it is losing that blessing. Parents can tell their children: ‘The Prophet  taught us to respect even the last bite, because we do not know where the most blessing is hidden.’ This practical teaching helps children value every piece of food on their plate.

The Story of the Trench

Another powerful story is from the Battle of the Trench (Al Ahzab). The companions of the Prophet ﷺ faced severe hunger while working tirelessly to defend Madinah. They tied stones to their stomachs to reduce the pain of hunger, yet they never wasted the little food they had. This story shows that respect for food and self-control are characteristics of a true believer, and that barakah comes when blessings are honoured and shared.
