Parenting Perspective
As children consistently grow in faith, their development should never be measured solely by academic grades or the number of memorised verses, but by the tangible refinement of their hearts. Humility, gratitude, and moral courage are correctly considered among the deepest, most enduring fruits of Islamic education. They fundamentally shape how a young believer navigates life: being acutely aware of their blessings, gentle in their strength, and steadfast in upholding the truth. To accurately measure sustained growth in these qualities, parents must look not for immediate perfection, but for true, lasting transformation for the quiet, consistent ways in which the heart becomes softer, steadier, and more sincerely devoted over time.
Observe How Your Child Handles Praise and Mistakes
Humility is most clearly demonstrated in how an individual responds to both success and failure. Watch whether your child accepts praise with Alhamdulillah (Praise be to Allah Almighty) openly on their lips and genuine gratitude in their tone. Do they readily share credit with others, or do they constantly seek personal attention? When they are corrected, do they listen and reflect thoughtfully, or do they become defensive and attempt to justify their actions? A truly humble heart does not deny its God given abilities; it simply and sincerely recognises that all talent and ability is ultimately from Allah Almighty. If your child begins to say, ‘Allah Almighty helped me,’ more often than ‘I did it,’ their humility is firmly taking root.
Look for Gratitude in Daily Speech and Behaviour
Gratitude (shukr) is a highly visible form of faith in action. Notice the frequency with which your child expresses sincere thanks, not only to Allah Almighty but genuinely to other people. Do they consistently show appreciation for their dedicated teachers, their siblings, and their friends? Gratitude visibly appears in their politeness, in the care they take of their belongings, and in their contentment with what they currently possess. Encourage meaningful moments of reflection at home: ask, ‘What specific blessing made you truly happy today?’ When children can sincerely recognise and articulate Allah Almighty’s gifts without any prompting, their hearts are actively awakening to constant remembrance.
Evaluate Moral Courage in Everyday Choices
Moral courage means consistently standing for the truth with kindness, even when that stance is deeply unpopular or personally inconvenient. It is the natural fruit of humility before Allah Almighty and spiritual strength derived from His constant remembrance. Observe whether your child honestly admits mistakes, actively defends others from unjustified mockery, or resolutely refuses to join in observed wrongdoing. Ask their teachers whether your child speaks up respectfully when they perceive something as unfair or unjust. Courage is not expressed through loudness or rebellion; it is moral clarity wisely joined with gentleness. A morally courageous child will correct others with respect and forgive with grace, clearly showing that their conscience has matured far beyond the simple fear of human judgment.
Notice Growth in Reflection and Accountability
A child who is consistently growing in humility and gratitude naturally begins to self correct. They feel genuine remorse after hurting others, actively seek forgiveness, and sincerely try to make immediate amends. When they fall short of expectations, they talk openly about improving for Allah Almighty is sake, never just for human approval. Faith based maturity is also clearly visible in stillness: the crucial ability to calmly pause before emotionally reacting. When your child begins to consciously think before they speak, or lower their tone during a conflict, these small, consistent acts signal an internalisation of $adab$ and self-awareness.
Spiritual Insight
In Islam, humility, gratitude, and moral courage are highly intertwined virtues. The noble Quran and the Sunnah of holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ consistently teach that genuine strength lies in sincere submission to Allah Almighty and dedicated service to His creation. A child who is wisely raised in this spiritual light grows to be fearless in their conscience yet remarkably tender in their heart.
The Foundation of Gratitude in the Noble Quran
Allah Almighty states in noble Quran at Surah Luqman (31), Verse 12:
‘And indeed, We (Allah Almighty) fortified (Prophet) Luqman (AS) with the wisdom that: “Gratitude is for Allah (Almighty); and whoever is (truly) grateful (to Allah Almighty) is in fact grateful for his (own benefit); and whoever rejects (the idea of being grateful, then know that) indeed, Allah (Almighty) is Eternally Independent and the All Praiseworthy”.‘
This verse powerfully connects wisdom with gratitude, clearly showing that thankfulness is not merely a transient reaction but a profound state of spiritual insight. Schools that are sincerely inspired by this verse encourage reflection on blessings and consistent service to others, actively helping students realise that gratitude deepens humility and powerfully sustains their moral strength.
Holy Prophet’s ﷺ Model of Humility and Courage
It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2588, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Whoever humbles himself for the sake of Allah Almighty, Allah Almighty will elevate him.’
This Hadith clearly teaches that humility is never a weakness; it is, in fact, elevation in the sight of Allah Almighty. When schools consciously teach children to serve quietly, respect sincerely, and act justly, they are directly building moral courage the inner strength to do what is right because it profoundly pleases Allah Almighty, not because it pleases people.
When assessing your child’s growth, listen less to their spoken words and more to their consistent habits. Do they apologise easily, help naturally, and express sincere thanks without external prompting? Do they consciously choose fairness even when it personally costs them comfort or approval? These are the reliable markers of faith successfully maturing through the heart. You should ask their teachers about subtle, visible signs: consistent calmness under pressure, fairness when interacting among peers, and their steadfast consistency in prayer and manners. True, lasting growth appears in small, ethical choices that are consistently repeated faithfully. At home, you must actively mirror these same values. Show humility by readily admitting your own mistakes, express your gratitude aloud daily, and firmly stand for justice gently. When children actively see these noble qualities genuinely lived, they quickly learn that true strength and spiritual softness can beautifully coexist. A school that consistently cultivates humility, gratitude, and moral courage builds believers who walk lightly upon the earth yet carry hearts of immense spiritual weight. Their true confidence comes from submission, their inner peace from remembrance, and their bravery from unwavering trust in Allah Almighty—the One who honours those who bow before Him and raises those who sincerely serve His creation with genuine sincerity and deep love.
