Parenting Perspective
Justice and fairness are not merely external rules in Islam; they are profound habits of the heart. A child raised in an environment where fairness is visibly lived daily will grow into an adult who courageously stands for truth even when it proves difficult. In an Islamic school, these essential values must not be confined to mere theory or assembly speeches; they should actively appear in the way teachers thoughtfully mark academic work, sensitively settle student conflicts, and treat every single student. To ensure that a school genuinely cultivates justice and fairness, one must look for clear signs of how equality, accountability, and compassion are practised in small, consistent, and everyday ways.
Observe Fairness in Everyday Interactions
When you visit the school, watch carefully how the adults consistently interact with the children. Does the teacher listen attentively to all students equally, or do they seem to overtly favour a select few? When common mistakes or errors occur, are the consequences applied consistently regardless of which student made the error? A truly just environment treats everyone with balance: being firm when necessary but always kind, honest in assessment yet humane in application. Notice whether teachers actively allow all voices to be heard in class discussions. A school that trains students to speak the truth with respect and to listen with humility is already successfully nurturing fairness as a moral reflex, not just a learned rule.
Ask About Conflict Resolution and Behaviour Policies
Engage with staff about their specific methods for handling student disputes. Ask key questions:
- ‘How do you diligently ensure that both sides of a story are always fully heard and considered?’
- ‘Do you actively involve students in reflecting on fairness when conflicts inevitably arise?’
- ‘How are restorative actions and reconciliation strongly encouraged after a dispute has occurred?’
A school that is genuinely inspired by prophetic guidance will consistently emphasise adl (justice) tempered with rahmah (mercy). They will speak openly about guiding the student’s conscience, not merely enforcing strict external order. When fairness is closely tied to taqwa (awareness of Allah Almighty), it successfully transforms a legal procedure into a high spiritual act.
Observe How Rewards and Recognition Are Handled
Justice is also clearly seen in how success is celebrated. Do the teachers praise only the top high achievers, or do they also sincerely recognise crucial virtues like honesty, persistent effort, and kindness? When a school consistently rewards moral character alongside excellent academic results, it effectively teaches children that fairness is valued as deeply as high excellence. Watch closely for clear signs of humility in praise. A fair school will actively encourage shared gratitude to Allah Almighty and promotes teamwork rather than individual pride. It consciously cultivates the moral understanding that every good outcome is ultimately shared, not simply owned by one person.
Look for Student Involvement in Ethical Learning
Ask directly how students are being taught to truly understand justice in practical, real life terms. Do the lessons explicitly include discussions on honesty, fairness, or the moral duty of standing up for others? Are older students given structured opportunities to mentor younger ones or to actively participate in student councils that promote fairness and equity? When students are trusted to make small, authentic moral decisions, such as mediating minor conflicts, leading group initiatives, or managing their team work with integrity, fairness becomes a sustainable habit, effectively shaping both their conscience and their future conduct.
Spiritual Insight
Justice and fairness (adl) are rightly considered among the highest virtues in Islam. The noble Quran and the Sunnah of holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ present justice not as a mere choice, but as a direct divine command. A school that is deeply rooted in this guidance ensures that fairness is not only formally taught, but sincerely lived, so that every action, every word spoken, and every school rule consistently aligns with both conscience and active compassion.
Justice as a Divine Command in the Noble Quran
Allah Almighty states in noble Quran at Surah Al Nahal (16), Verse 90:
‘Indeed, Allah (Almighty) orders you to promote justice and benevolence; and to be generous towards (positively developing) those that are within your jurisdiction; and to prevent that which is immoral, acts of irrationality, and cruelty; and He (Allah Almighty) offers this enlightened direction so that you continue to realise (the true pathway of Islam).’
This powerful verse forms the foundational moral blueprint of all Islamic education. Justice (adl) is an explicit command, not a mere suggestion. A school that genuinely lives by this core principle builds a transparent culture where bias and injustice have absolutely no place, where every single student feels safe, heard, and respected as an honoured creation of Allah Almighty.
Holy Prophet’s ﷺ Teaching on Fairness and Integrity
It is recorded in Jami Tirmidhi, Hadith 1329, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘The most beloved of people to Allah Almighty on the Day of Resurrection and the closest to Him will be the just leader, and the most hated and furthest from Him will be the tyrannical leader.‘
This powerful Hadith clearly shows that the consistent practice of justice is a high act of worship and leadership. When teachers, prefects, or administrators act with fairness, they are fulfilling a profound, sacred trust. Schools that effectively emphasise this Hadith in their daily practice teach students that every single choice they make, including how they share resources, how they speak to others, or how they correct mistakes, can either bring them closer to Allah Almighty or distance them, depending entirely on whether it is done justly.
When visiting a school, actively look for the feeling of genuine fairness. Is the overall environment peaceful and transparent, or is it tense and unequal? Are students visibly confident to speak the truth kindly, knowing with certainty that their voice will be heard? A school that lives in fairness truly radiates calmness and deep trust. At home, you must consistently echo these same vital principles. Be perfectly consistent in both praise and correction and explicitly explain why fairness is so pleasing to Allah Almighty. Encourage your child to bravely defend those who are being treated unjustly and to maintain sincere humility when they themselves are proven right. A school that successfully fosters justice and fairness as core moral habits raises children who sincerely see equity as faith in action. They learn that true justice is not about winning an argument, but about always honouring the truth. In such noble places, every lesson, whether academic or moral, actively becomes a significant step toward taqwa, deep humility, and the noble balance that ultimately defines a sincere believer who walks the earth with unshakeable integrity and profound peace.
