How can parents prepare children to respond politely to insensitive religious comments?

Parenting Perspective

School life can sometimes confront a child with comments about their religion that are clumsy, teasing, or even intentionally cutting. These moments can test both their confidence and their manners. While a parent cannot control what other people say, they can prepare their child with the tools to respond in a way that is both polite and self-respecting.

Building a Calm Reflex

The first step is to give a child a calm, default response to fall back on. When teased about their fasting, modesty, or prayer, children often feel a sudden surge of embarrassment or anger. A parent can rehearse simple, steady replies with them, such as: ‘This is what my faith teaches, and I am happy with it’. Having a prepared response helps a child to avoid feeling trapped, tongue-tied, or overwhelmed in the moment.

Separating Ignorance from Malice

It is important to teach a child that not every insensitive comment comes from a place of cruelty. Many children are genuinely curious about Islam but may express their curiosity clumsily. A parent can help their child to distinguish between genuine ignorance and intentional mockery. When faced with ignorance, a short, friendly explanation can help to build a bridge of understanding. When faced with mockery, a dignified silence or the act of walking away can be a far stronger response than reacting angrily. Teaching this difference equips a child with crucial social discernment.

Preserving Dignity with Politeness

Politeness is not a weakness; it is the strength to hold one’s ground without losing one’s grace. A parent might remind their child: ‘Your answer always reflects who you are, not just what you believe’. When a child understands that every response is an opportunity to model the dignity of their faith, they begin to realise that politeness is a powerful form of self-respect. A brief practice session at home, where a parent role-plays making an awkward comment, can be a powerful way to prepare a child to act with composure when a real situation arises.

Spiritual Insight

Islam places great value on responding to harshness with patience and dignity, teaching that true strength lies not in loud retaliation but in a gentle and unwavering firmness. Encouraging a child to adopt this spirit frames their politeness not as a form of silence under pressure, but as a noble act of faith.

Allah Almighty states in noble Quran at Surah Al Furqaan (25), Verse 63:

And the true servants of the One Who is Most Beneficent are those who wander around the Earth with humility; and when they are addressed by the ignorant people, they say: “Peace be unto you”.

This beautiful verse offers a child profound reassurance. It teaches that when they respond calmly to insensitive remarks, they are embodying the very character that Allah Almighty praises. In such a situation, they are not losing an argument; they are winning by rising above it.

It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2609a, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘ The strong-man is not one who wrestles well but the strong man is one who controls himself when he is in a fit of rage.’

A parent can directly link this Hadith to their child’s school life, explaining that choosing politeness over an angry outburst is a sign of true strength. Even a small smile or a calm, quiet reply can transform an uncomfortable moment into one of quiet, dignified victory.
