Parenting Perspective
As young people grow and begin to dream of careers and independence, money and livelihood naturally become central concerns. In a world where dishonest means are often glamorised, a young person may wonder why they should limit themselves to earning a Halal income when others appear to progress much faster without such boundaries. Your role as a parent is to help them to see that true dignity lies not in quick gains, but in living a life of integrity and self-respect.
This mindset can give them the strength not just for earning a living, but for living a life that is deeply rooted in integrity and faith.
Start with Honest Conversations
Explain openly and without judgement that the temptation to seek easier routes is real and understandable. You can share stories from your own life or from the lives of people your child respects who have faced these kinds of choices. It is important to discuss not only the financial side but also the often hidden emotional cost of taking shortcuts; the anxiety, mistrust, and guilt that can follow dishonest earnings.
Contrast Short-Term Gain with Long-Term Peace
Children and young people often focus on immediate outcomes. You can gently help them to see the bigger picture: the quiet pride of providing for oneself and one’s family without any shame, the stability that comes from being trusted in a profession, and the deep, inner peace of knowing that one’s earnings carry blessings (barakah). This long-term lens can help them to see beyond the temporary glitter of quick wealth.
Frame Dignity as a Form of Inner Strength
Help your child to see that earning a Halal income is not just about money; it is about their own self-worth. You could say: ‘When you choose the Halal path, you are showing yourself that you will not sell your values for the sake of ease. That courage is what makes a person truly dignified.’ Linking their choices to their personal strength can transform what feels like a religious duty into a source of personal empowerment.
Encourage Reflection Through Journaling
Invite your child to reflect on moments when they have resisted temptations, even small ones. You could ask them to keep a short ‘values diary’ and to record any choice, big or small, that they made based on honesty or faith. Over time, this becomes a powerful record of their moral integrity and helps them to trust in their own resilience.
Spiritual Insight
Islam places an immense emphasis on seeking a Halal provision, not just as an external rule but as a source of nourishment for both the body and the soul. Choosing to earn a Halal income, even when shortcuts seem easier and more attractive, is a profound act of striving for the pleasure of Allah Almighty, and this striving is filled with dignity.
Allah Almighty states in noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verse 172:
‘O you who are believers, consume from amongst that which is purified, which We (Allah Almighty) have provided for you; and be grateful to Allah (Almighty), if you (truly) worship (Allah Almighty) exclusively.’
Here, the ‘good things’ (tayyibat) refer not only to what is physically beneficial but also to what is earned and consumed in a Halal way. Our provision becomes an act of worship when it is pursued in a manner that is pleasing to Allah Almighty. This verse can remind your child that their dignity rests not in the quantity of their possessions, but in the purity of their earnings and the gratitude in their heart.
It is recorded in Riyadh Al Saliheen, Hadith 1851, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Allah Almighty is pure and accepts only that which is pure’
This hadith highlights why any shortcut that compromises one’s integrity can never bring true or lasting success. Even if a dishonest income seems to solve a worldly problem, it lacks blessing and will ultimately undermine one’s inner peace. By linking the concept of dignity to honesty and Halal provision, you can help your child to see that resisting shortcuts is not about being left behind; it is about walking a path of honour, where every penny earned carries the blessing of Allah Almighty.
