Parenting Perspective
When your child discovers the gift of a truly loyal friend who accepts them for who they are, it can feel like a significant turning point in their emotional world. Children who have wrestled with feelings of rejection or loneliness often carry a silent tension inside them. Finding a friend who values them for who they are can release this burden, creating a powerful and profound sense of relief. Your role as a parent is to help them to pause, reflect, and truly recognise the gift they have been given.
Help Them to Name the Feeling of Relief
Children often rush past their positive emotions without fully processing them. You can sit with your child and ask gentle, open-ended questions to help them anchor the feeling: ‘How do you feel in your heart when you are with this friend?’ or ‘What is different about this friendship compared to others?’ Naming feelings like comfort, safety, or joy helps them to understand the true source of their relief.
Reinforce the Precious Value of Loyalty
Explain to your child that while many people can be friendly, a truly loyal friend is a rare and precious gift. You can share examples from your own life or from family stories where loyal friends stood the test of time. This teaches your child to prioritise depth over numbers when it comes to their friendships.
Guide Their Reflection on Trust
Guide your child to notice how the feeling of trust manifests in their body, for example, as relaxed shoulders, calmer speech, or an absence of fear. This builds their emotional awareness. Journaling prompts can also help to solidify this understanding:
- ‘I feel most safe with my friend when…’
- ‘One thing I admire about their loyalty is…’
This anchors their feeling of relief in their consciousness, rather than allowing it to remain a fleeting, unexamined feeling.
Encourage Balance and Protect the Bond
Remind your child that while one loyal friend is a wonderful blessing, no friendship is flawless. It is important to encourage a sense of balance: gratitude for their loyalty without expecting perfection. This helps to prevent future disappointment if small conflicts arise, and it strengthens their resilience in maintaining healthy, realistic bonds. This focus on realistic expectations is key to a lasting friendship.
Model Appreciation and Reciprocity
Show your child how to nurture important relationships with small acts of kindness, honesty, and reciprocity. A loyal friend is not just found; they are kept through mutual respect and consistent effort.
Spiritual Insight
The feeling of relief that comes with finding a loyal friend is more than just an emotional comfort; it is a reflection of the way Islam treasures companionship that is rooted in sincerity and goodness.
Allah Almighty states in noble Quran at Surah Al Zukhruf (43), Verse 67:
‘When friends (will be gathered) on the Day of judgment, some of them will be enemies with each other, except those who attained virtuosity.’
This verse highlights that a friendship’s true worth is granted eternal value only when it is tied to righteousness. A loyal friend in this world who strengthens one’s faith and encourages kindness will also be a beloved companion in the Hereafter, unlike friendships that are based on shallow or worldly gain.
It is recorded in Al Adab Al Mufrad, Hadith 239, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘The believer is the mirror of his brother, and the believer is the brother of a believer; he protects him against loss and defends him from behind’
This hadith paints a powerful picture of a true friendship, one that is rooted in loyalty, honest reflection, and mutual protection. You can share this with your child to show them that Islam honours such loyal bonds as a beautiful reflection of faith itself. Encourage your child to see their loyal friend not only as a source of personal comfort, but as a trust (amanah) from AllahAlmighty. By valuing, nurturing, and giving thanks for this bond, they learn that real companionship is not measured by popularity, but by the quiet, profound relief of being fully and sincerely accepted.
