How can I encourage my child to notice joy when one loyal friend values them without judgement?

Parenting Perspective

Children often measure their social worth in numbers: the quantity of their friends, the number of invitations they receive, or how often they are included in a group. In this flurry of counting, the quiet, profound gift of a single loyal friend can sometimes be overlooked. Your task as a parent is to help your child to slow down, notice the deep joy in that singular bond, and treasure it as the blessing it is.

By supporting their reflection in this way, you teach your child that true joy is found not in numbers but in authenticity. The ability to recognise and value one true friend is a life skill that will serve them long after the social dynamics of the playground have faded.

Name the Treasure of Loyalty

Begin by drawing your child’s attention to the quality and rarity of their friendship. You could say, ‘Not everyone is blessed with a friend who accepts them exactly as they are. That kind of loyalty is a rare and special treasure.’ This helps your child to see that the quality of loyalty far outweighs the quantity of friends. By naming the value of the bond, you plant the seed of conscious gratitude.

Guide Their Reflection on the Friendship

Ask gentle questions that guide your child to reflect on the specifics of their connection. This deepens their awareness that the friendship is not accidental, but a true source of comfort and joy that deserves to be celebrated.

  • ‘What do you enjoy most when you are with this friend?’
  • ‘In what ways do they make you feel understood and seen?’
  • ‘What special moments with them stand out in your memory?’

Contrast Judgement with Acceptance

Children often carry insecurities from interactions with peers who criticise or exclude them. Help your child to see the clear contrast between those experiences and this special friendship. You might observe, ‘Some children may tease or compare, but notice how your friend never does that. That is what sincere connection looks like.’ When they can clearly see this difference, they learn to measure their social worth by the quality of sincerity rather than by the quantity of external approval.

Nurture the Friendship Through Reciprocation

Guide your child to not only notice the gift of their friend, but to actively nurture it. Encourage small acts of appreciation, such as writing a kind note, sharing something meaningful, or simply saying, ‘I am so glad we are friends.’ These acts of active gratitude not only strengthen the bond but also reinforce their own joy through the act of giving back. You can also share stories of your own cherished childhood friendships, highlighting how even one true friend left a lasting and positive mark on your life.

Spiritual Insight

Islam teaches us to treasure sincerity and to recognise that even something that appears small in number can carry immense blessing (barakah). In a world where children may crave the approval of the crowd, guiding them to see the profound worth of one loyal companion aligns beautifully with Islamic wisdom.

Allah Almighty states in noble Quran at Surah Al Furqaan (25), Verse 28:

‘“Woe be unto me, how I wish that I had not taken so-and-so as a friend”.’

This verse, spoken from a place of deep regret on the Day of Judgement, shows the powerful and eternal impact our friends can have on us, for either good or ill. It underscores the vital importance of choosing friends wisely. For your child, it is a reminder that the right friend, even if there is only one, is a blessing far greater than a multitude of friends who might mislead them.

It is recorded in Jami Tirmidhi, Hadith 2378, that holy Prophet Muhammad  said:

‘A man is upon the religion of his friend, so let one of you look at whom he befriends.’

This hadith makes it clear that our friendships are not trivial; they have the power to shape our character and our faith. If your child has been blessed with one friend who values them without judgement and encourages them towards goodness, it is a clear sign of Allah Almighty’s mercy. Encourage your child to see this companionship as a source of joy, guidance, and strength. When you help them to connect their lived experience with these timeless teachings, their single friendship is transformed from being ‘only one’ to being ‘more than enough.’
