How do we rehearse muting, unmuting and turn-taking on calls?

Parenting Perspective

For many children, virtual calls bring a unique mix of anxiety, excitement, and confusion. They may hesitate to speak, worry about interrupting others, or fumble with mute buttons, creating frustration or embarrassment. Begin by acknowledging this core feeling: ‘I can see you want to participate clearly but worry about interrupting or forgetting buttons — that shows thoughtfulness and awareness.’ By framing online etiquette as a set of practical skills rather than a test of perfection, children can build confidence while learning respect for others in shared virtual spaces.

The Virtual Etiquette Rehearsal Plan

Introduce One Control at a Time

Start by teaching muting and unmuting separately from speaking.

  • Micro action: Practise toggling the mute button at home in a relaxed environment, so the child becomes familiar with the mechanics without pressure.
  • Parent script: ‘Let us try muting and unmuting a few times, so it feels natural.’ Mastery of controls reduces anxiety and creates a foundation for fluid participation during actual calls.

Use a Turn-Taking System

Children thrive with clear visual or verbal cues.

  • Micro action: Create a simple signal, such as raising a hand on camera or using the “raise hand” feature, and practise responding to it.
  • Parent script: ‘Let us wait for each hand to go down before speaking — this way everyone has a chance.’ Practising this reinforces politeness, patience, and attentiveness, helping children understand that conversation flow is a shared responsibility, even online.

Simulate Real Call Scenarios

Recreate short mock meetings with siblings or parents.

  • Micro action: Take turns speaking on a pre-planned topic while practising muting, unmuting, and observing turn cues.
  • Parent script: ‘Let us each talk for one minute and then pass the turn — notice how smooth it feels.’ This rehearsal builds muscle memory and confidence, reducing cognitive load during live sessions.

Incorporate Calming Micro Pauses

Teach children to pause briefly after unmuting to ensure they have the floor and are not speaking over someone else.

  • Micro action: Count to three silently before speaking.
  • Parent script: ‘Pause for a moment after unmuting to see if anyone else is talking.’ This cultivates mindfulness, controlled pacing, and respect, demonstrating that patience enhances clarity.

Debrief After Each Practice

Reflect on what worked and what felt challenging.

  • Micro action: Note successful turns, mistakes, or confusing moments and plan the next rehearsal accordingly.
  • Parent script: ‘Which parts felt smooth, and which do we need to practise again?’ Debriefing promotes self-awareness and gradual improvement

Spiritual Insight

Observing etiquette in virtual calls is a reflection of respect for peers and their contributions, embodying Islamic principles of dignity and consideration.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran in Surah Al Hujuraat (49), Verses 11:

Those of you who are believers, do not let a nation ridicule another nation, as perhaps it may be that they are better than them…’

Though this verse addresses interpersonal respect broadly, it guides children to honour others’ turns and voices, even in digital interactions.

It is recorded in Al Adab Al Mufrad, Hadith 112, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘The believer is not one who eats his fill while his neighbour goes hungry.’

This Hadith reminds children that attentiveness and fairness to others, even in conversation, are acts of faith and kindness. By practising muting, unmuting, and turn taking, children learn that conscious attention to others’ needs — including auditory space in virtual meetings — is a form of moral responsibility

Through gradual control practice, structured turn taking, realistic mock calls, mindful pauses, and reflective debriefs, children gain confidence and mastery in virtual interactions. They discover that online spaces, when approached with patience, etiquette, and care, become arenas to strengthen communication skills and character simultaneously, blending practical digital fluency with spiritual awareness.
