How do I show my child that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught patience through hardships?

Parenting Perspective

Children often learn their most important lessons through stories. When you are teaching them about the virtue of patience, one of the most powerful ways is to share how the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ lived through extraordinary hardships, yet never abandoned his trust in Allah. These stories do not need to be long or heavy. Even small moments, when told in a child-friendly way, can plant the seeds of resilience in their heart.

In their eyes, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ can become not just a figure of history, but a beloved teacher whose example can live on in their own everyday choices. This vision can help them to carry the virtue of patience not as a burden, but as a beautiful strength that connects them to Allah.

Begin with Gentle Storytelling

You can describe events from the Seerah with a beautiful simplicity. For example, you can explain how the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was mocked and rejected in Makkah, but always responded with a calm and noble dignity. You could tell them: ‘He could have become angry, but instead, he showed patience and kindness. That is one of the reasons why Allah honoured him so much.’ Stories can make these profound lessons feel more real than any abstract advice.

Highlight Relatable Struggles

A child may not be able to understand the concepts of exile or persecution, but they do understand the feelings of loss, sadness, or having to wait for something. You might share how the Prophet ﷺ experienced the deep sadness of losing his parents as a child, yet he grew up with patience and an unwavering trust in Allah. This helps to connect their own small, daily frustrations to a much bigger and more inspiring example of endurance.

Explain to your child that patience does not mean that life will always be easy, but that it means holding on strongly until Allah brings relief. You can say: ‘When the Prophet ﷺ went through moments of pain, he grew even closer to Allah. Every hardship you face can also be a chance to make your own heart stronger.’

Use Practical, Everyday Parallels

When your child is upset about having to wait, missing a toy, or losing in a game, you can gently connect it back to the prophetic example: ‘Remember how the Prophet ﷺ was patient even when people were unkind to him? We can also try to be patient in this small moment.’ This makes the virtue of prophetic patience something that they can practise in their own daily lives. This is a form of lived Sunnah.

Spiritual Insight

The life of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is the greatest human example of patience. His hardships were not punishments from Allah, but were a path through which he could show us how to hold on to our faith through every kind of trial. From rejection to exile, from personal loss to the hardships of battle, he consistently demonstrated a perfect and beautiful model of calm, faith, and perseverance.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Ahzaab (33), Verses 21:

‘Indeed, there is for you (O mankind) in (the personality of) the Messenger of Allah (Almighty) (Prophet Muhammad ﷺ), an outstanding example of incredible benevolence; it is for those people that have hope in Allah (Almighty) and the Day of Judgement, and (desire) to remember Allah (Almighty) excessively.’

This verse affirms that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is not only a messenger of revelation, but is also a perfect model for our daily lives, especially in how to endure difficulties with patience and faith.

It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 5641, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘No fatigue, nor disease, nor sorrow, nor sadness, nor hurt, nor distress befalls a Muslim, even if it were the prick he receives from a thorn, but that Allah expiates some of his sins for that…’

Through this hadith, a child can learn that their hardships are never meaningless. Every small difficulty, when it is met with patience, can become a means of forgiveness and reward from Allah. This can transform their struggles from something they fear into something they can embrace with a sense of hope.
